Where Do We Go From Here?
Buffy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dawn: Where do we go ...from here?
Buffy/Spike: Where do we go ...from here?
Giles: The battles done
And we kind of won
Giles/Tara: So we sound our victory cheer...
Where do we go from here?
Anya/Xander: Why is the path unclear?
When we know home is near.
Everyone: Understand we'll go hand in hand
But we'll walk alone in fear
Giles: Tell me!
Everyone: Where do we go from here.
When does the end appear?

When do the trumpets cheer?
The curtains close on a kiss,god knows

We can tell the end is near...
Where do we go from here?

The Spike, Buffy, Giles, Tara, Anya, Xander, and Dawn gather together, and while they have won the battle, they still don't know what's next for them. The first two lines of the song are delivered by Dawn, who is feeling lost and directionless. Buffy and Spike soon echo her words, prompting Giles and Tara to remind everyone that the battle is over, and they have emerged victorious. However, this victory doesn't necessarily come with a sense of accomplishment, and they are still uncertain of their future, which creates an air of anxiety and fear among everyone. They know that they have each other to rely on, but they are unsure how long that will last as they are also aware that they'll eventually have to "walk alone in fear" at some point. The lyrics of the song ask the most challenging question of all - where do we go from here?

@BrianGates06

So good!

@brandoncolon3047

Also notice giles,s almost sarcastic nod and shrug when he starts singing

@cerrisdoesart2395

I grew up with this then it went off netflix so... this is the only place to watch it from. I honestly think I was less then five when I started watching this. It's the staple of my childhood.

@brandoncolon3047

@@cerrisdoesart2395 look for it on dvd maybe?

@cerrisdoesart2395

@@brandoncolon3047 Eh, maybe. But don't judge me for this but I think I may already have it in the basement. I used to have it. Now I honestly don't know. Haven't seen all seven season dvds in a while.

Spike when he realises he no longer needs to sing and just buggers off, terrific actor. Classic. This series was so epic.

This episode was pure genius. He could have made it a fun little filler episode with singing, but instead, joss whedon made it a pinnacle episode. not only did he fracture the entire relationship of willow and terra, but he also broke their friendship in buffy dropping the heaven bombshell. And he established a new relationship that had only been blossoming before with buffy and spike. even his use of music was fantastic. in the second to last song, where buffy sings about heaven, the cords are disjointed and the song is erratic, like she's trying to force the happy parts in, only for the sad parts to be drawn out. and when she sings the word 'heaven', its a broken cord, and the note itself drops flat... its broken like buffy is. Perfect accompaniment.
he turned what should have been a filler episode into one of the most important episodes in the entire series.
I fucking love this series.

EDIT: and unlike some shitty directors, he knew who could sing what, and chose their songs according to thgeir personal talents. it would have went terrible if he'd made xander try to sing a love ballad for example.

He only got the idea after alot of nights of the cast hanging out at his house turned into jam sessions. From that he knew who could sing and came up with the whole thing in about 2 months.

@thecollector75

wow you hit nail on the head there... totally agree with you
