My absolute favorite episode of Buffy, and it's all thanks to Sweet the demon. Hinton Battle was the perfect choice to play him, very sad to have just heard of his recent passing. RIP Hinton, the theater industry lost an icon but heaven gained one hell of a talent. Rest easy sir and thank you for all your talent, dedication and hard work!!!

She technically is just a plot device, if it was't for Joss writing Glory into the show, Dawn would be non existent. She was literally never mentioned before Glory showed up. Glory is the reason Dawn is a character (not to be mean, just being honest). But i do agree that it would have been at least more reasonable for Michele Tratchtenburg if she had a much more important role as the others.

Anya Mccalla There is ballet involved. When Dawn is lifted between the four men, that's ballet. When she wakes up and lifts her leg, that's also ballet. She seems to be on tiptoes for a lot of the routine too, which is very common in ballet!

I also love Sweet's tap routine. I danced as a child(basic ballet, tap and disco)but could never be that good!

This was the first musical episode in a drama series, ever. There had been two comedy shows that did a musical episode before this: two on the "The Drew Carey Show", and one episode of "I Love Lucy". This episode actually established the entire genre of "musical" episodes, and was the first to actually integrate it into the story (as well as to have all original songs; most of the others were covers), rather than people randomly breaking out into singing and dancing numbers. Everybody that did this later is essentially copying Buffy, even if they don't know it. Musical episodes weren't really a thing before this.

Why? Michelle is hot, and quite of age these days. There's nothing wrong with saying she's hot even at the age she was then, maybe in a more appropriate way, but she didn't just magically change looks wise when she turned 18. Hell, E might be a 14 year old or someone close to Michelle's age here. Now if someone wrote a comment about preferring her younger self then there's an issue, but saying she's hot doesn't make E-Bomber sick. Expand your perception a little before you attack someone.

There's a reason "Sweet" has three Tony Awards. I think Joss did an amazing job writing for each character based on the vocal abilities of the actor. Sarah Michelle Gellar has a kind of girlish voice, so he worked with that. Alyson Hannigan? Not a singer. (her best line, "I think this line's mostly filler"), and Michelle Trachtenberg sounds like she's seven, but she's a great dancer, ergo, the ballet sequence. Spike, Giles, Anya, and Tara were all trained singers, so they got bigger and/or more intricate numbers (sorry, but "Bunnies" kills me--you can't fake a voice like that). Then, as good as the cast was, you get to The Bronze, and Hinton Battle blows them all away. It's like having Mike Trout play on your neighborhood softball team, or DeNiro in an amateur community theater production of "Our Town." Completely. Different. Level.

This is my favorite episode, but my second would be "Tabula Rasa," which is the next ep. It keeps up the whole surreal, whimsical vibe for the first half, then the thing happens with the thing, and the whole thing crumbles, leaving the show in a much darker place than before. That's brilliance.

So, SO true! I didn't realize who all was trained, beyond Giles and Spike. That's really interesting and certainly explains a lot!

When it comes to some of my personal favorites, I really love Once More With Feeling and Hush, which also contain by far my favorite antagonists. Both were so clever and groundbreaking. Hell, this episode began the trend of standalone musical episodes. I also utterly adore Tabula Rasa, too. They are all so damn funny!

He didn't get to kill the Slayer....again....but he did enough damage, caused plenty of death, and most importantly completely broke their spirits, and their team. Not only did he end up winning (he destroyed them all by letting them be honest with themselves), he's the coolest baddie the scooby gang has has to fight.

Also, did you know this whole musical started pretty much as a joke? Joss Whedon took upon this joke as a challenge and in no time he presented the script for the episode. Sarah Michelle Gellar hated having to sing, and yet her delivery is spectacular.

@@Stickings90 Yeah, since "pissed" obviously means "get really drunk" in British slang, the UK censors would never allow a 15 year old to say it on a show that's not labeled "mature". Kind of silly, in my opinion. Same with the other example by "SuperSonicmania", which is censored for a similar reason (them feeling it's inappropriate to speak about a minor that way). Britain is kind of a nanny state, compared to other English-speaking countries. A lot more restrictions on speech there, and government oversight into art and performance. I've always been a fan of Buffy. The musical episode is one of my favorite and Dawn's Ballet is my favorite scene. Michelle and Hinton Battle (the demon) nailed it. I've watch this scene too many times to count. Second is when Buffy sings she was pulled out of Heaven. Josh Whedon is very talented. I don't understand why none of the cable channels are showing Buffy or Angel reruns both great shows.

Sweet was played by Hinton Battle, who at the age of 16, was the first actor to play the Scarecrow in the Broadway version of "The Wiz!"

It really blows my mind that What You Feel is not one of the most popular songs downloaded from this album on iTunes. I mean, wth? The song is dripping with sex appeal and, while I love a lot of songs from this episode, Hinton Battle blew the rest away with this, especially when you combine the vocals with the dance choreography.
For real, probably my all-time favorite Buffy episodes and one I forced a lot of friends who never even watched Buffy to see. Once More With Feeling, Hush, and Tabula Rasa are freaking classic. But the former was probably the most groundbreaking and started a trend that still goes on to this day!

Let's not forget, Sweet is easily the most powerful demon the Scooby Gang ever faced, and possibly the most powerful antagonist, too. He created utter chaos quicker, most effectively, and certainly with more style than any other. They never defeat him, either. At best, things were left at a stale-mate, and the only reason Sweet left was because he wasn't so down with Xander being his 'Queen'. Lmao! xD
Sweet is the kind of villain I dream of and utterly adore. I love his concept so freaking much. <3

What's funny when you think about it is that when Faith accidentaly kills a human it's extremely serious, Gilles and Buffy are extremely worried about it. Then When Buffy thought she accidentaly killed a girld because of demons who cast illusions summoned by Warren's team, it's extremely serious again, even thought it's an accident.

And then comes Alex, who Summons a demon on purpose, a person dies horribly, burning, and no one gives a shit about it ! XD

Not true. She didn't "learn ballet for weeks" for the episode. She grew up being classically trained in ballet. She actually requested a ballet dancing scene because she loved it and didn't want to just sing.

As "Texas Rangers" says, she had already taken ballet for years at this point. So I'm not sure where you got that "for weeks" thing. Both she and Sarah Michelle Gellar are trained dancers, and figure skaters; the latter (if I recall correctly) is how they knew each other, before Michelle Trachtenberg was cast as Dawn. SMG was a semi-professional ice dancer before she got more into acting, and Michelle Trachtenberg used her ice dancing talents in some Disney movie.

I also did know about Michelle figure skating in the the Disney movie as well. I could’ve sworn I saw a behind the scenes of Michelle mentioning the ballet scene and learning the routine for weeks but if I’m mistaken I apologize. Either way she danced beautifully.

Did anyone notice that when Sweet turned Dawn's clothes into a dress that they changed before he performed the spell? Also, I loved this enemy so I'm pleased that Buffy didn't actually kill or defeat him. He left because he WANTED to, not because Buffy MADE him.
