The Last Long Song
Built to Spill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your picture
Is still
On my wall
On my wall
The colors
Are bright
Bright
As ever
The red is strong
The blue is true
Some things last a long time
Some things last a long time your picture

Is still
On my wall
On my wall
I think
About you
Often
Often

I can't forget all the things we did
Some things last a long time
Some things last a long time it's funny
But it's true
And it's true
But it's not funny
Time comes and goes
All the while
I still think of you
Some things last a long time
Your picture

Is still
On my wall
On my wall
The colors
Are bright
Bright
As ever

Times that we shared
All that we forget

Some things last a life time
Some things last a life time

Overall Meaning

The song "Some Things Last A Long Time" by Built to Spill is a tender and poignant reflection on memories and the power they hold. The opening lines "Your picture is still on my wall" immediately create a sense of nostalgia and longing, as the singer gazes upon a vivid image of someone who is no longer present in their life. The repetition of this phrase throughout the song emphasizes the lasting impact of memories and how they can continue to haunt and comfort us long after the moment has passed.

The lyrics also touch on the idea that time moves on, but memories remain. The line "Time comes and goes, all the while I still think of you" captures this sentiment, as the singer acknowledges the passage of time while still feeling the pull of the past. The bridge of the song "Times that we shared, all that we forget, some things last a lifetime" reinforces this idea, that while memories may fade, there are certain experiences that endure.

Overall, "Some Things Last A Long Time" is a beautiful and heartfelt meditation on the power of memories to shape our lives and relationships. The repetition of phrases and themes throughout the song create a sense of circularity and timelessness, evoking the cyclical nature of memory and the emotions it can evoke.

Lyrics:
I didn't know there was a problem
Well there's those few but nothing more
After you told me that, I couldn't smile or laugh
I couldn't smile or laugh

Too late for us
Too late for us
Tried to take it with you when you went and cracked in two

Too late for us
Too late for us
Tried to take it with you when you went and cracked in two

I didn't know there was a problem
Well there's those few but nothing more
After you told me that I couldn't smile or laugh
I couldn't smile or laugh

Too late for us
Too late for us
Tried to take it with you when you went and cracked in two

@Built2Chill

For the last decade and a half I've been averaging three to four hours of built to spill a day ....and I'm only NOW hearing this for the first time?! Life changing thank you very much for showing these hidden gems left there by the greatest band of all time for us to find

@trevorwencl3796

I was in the band Fluke Starbucker which is on this Fort Hazel Magic comp. To say the least, it was an honor to be on the same compilation as Built To Spill and so many other great bands like Ryan Adams, 31 Knots, Lowbelly, etc. After some pleading, I got the Doug to agree to play this song at a show in SF in the late 90s. It turned out to be a very extended rendition as I recall. It was wonderful.

This is phenomenal. Been a fan since first seeing 'em play in Seattle at the Sailors Union in 1995. And this track is rad to have access too. Plus, your other uploads!!! Thank you so much for sharing. Oh, and sharing the 2014 Gonna Lose recording on the same day as the new one releasing! Genius. That led me to this!

Thanks so much for posting this! I’ve never heard it before and it’s got that classic moody broken-hearted Built to Spill vibe I love

@liamwynne566

This is great, very similar to Easy Way by them, but I ain't complaining!
