Prayer for Generosity
Bukas Palad Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous
Teach me to serve You as I should
To give and not to count the cost
To fight and not to heed the wounds
To toil and not to seek for rest
To labor and ask not for reward
Save that of knowing that I do Your most holy wil

Overall Meaning

The song "Prayer for Generosity" by Bukas Palad is a moving prayer that asks God to teach the singer how to be more generous in their daily life. The lyrics are a plea for guidance and direction, as the singer acknowledges their own shortcomings and asks for help in overcoming them. The first line, "Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous," sets the tone for the rest of the song, which is full of humble, heartfelt requests for guidance.

The second and third lines, "Teach me to serve You as I should/To give and not to count the cost," speak to the idea that generosity is not just about giving material things, but also about giving of oneself, without any expectation of reward or recognition. The fourth line, "To fight and not to heed the wounds," suggests that being truly generous requires courage and perseverance, as it may involve overcoming personal obstacles or even facing rejection or opposition from others.

The fifth and sixth lines, "To toil and not to seek for rest/To labor and ask not for reward," emphasize the importance of hard work and dedication in being generous, and the need to give freely and without any expectation of personal gain. The final line, "Save that of knowing that I do Your most holy will," underscores the idea that true generosity is not about personal gain or recognition, but rather about doing what is right and fulfilling one's duty to God.

My favorite prayer. Thank you St Ignatius De Loyola. πŸ™

One of my favorite Mass songs. The Tagalog version of this is Panalangin sa Pagiging Bukas Palad. Although some would have this sung during Offertory, Prayer For Generosity is more appropriately sung during Communion. It is also sung on certain occassions wherein a 2nd collection is done for a special need of the Church's pastoral ministry (i.e. Alay Kapwa Lenten program, missionary apostolate for the needs of priests assigned in remote areas, seafarers, migrants, victims of calamities, etc.)
