Bunji Garlin Lyrics

Yuh think this come with a free pass?
A nice little house and green grass
Dis ah some ah the vilest creatures
And if yuh come here with ah weak heart
Yuh go pass out before the weak pass
Dis worse than jeepers creepers
Werewolf, monsters and reapers
I come from a different timing
Where you walk on a very thin lining
Was either music or badness
And you could lose yuh life in d rhyming
Many place we woulda go to sing
Man have ice pick and blades
And long things weh shining
And the adversary of the night
Might enter the venue
With a death squad behind him
And if you tell them the wrong thing
Ah guarantee d next six... seven months yu hiding
Cuz that squad weh riding
Dem nuh fraid no police uniform neither siren
The incorrect path of speech
Cud make yuh end up inna d gulf of paria
But the mic right and the light bright
And you fight like a warrior.

So when yuh see meh bun up the place
Lee meh lemme bun up the place
And when yuh see meh tun up the place
Lee meh lemme tun up the place
Woi when yuh see meh bun up the place
Lee meh lemme bun up the place
Cause bredda i come from the place
Is either the mic or yuh gone in ah grave
Drop tune and make the children wine
Big women and the big men wine
Everybody do ah ting den wine
Even the mannequin dem wine
Rough time I from in them time
Yuh cyah have ah thin skin them time
Cyah have ah yellow intestine
Cyah have ah thin skin them time

I come from a different zone
Where many people sheltered at home
With them nice computers and phone
With them fresh bank account and loan
12 oโ€ฒclock in the night we ah roam
Warlords no money to go home
Nobody had mechanical surgery
But everybody hips had chrome
We stay sharp we doh care what the topic was
Reach the destination we nuh care what the traffic was
Lyrics always ready down below the oesophagus
Get your dictionary learn about the oesophagus
Step into the ring everybody know what trouble was
Lyrics hard like a turtle back from up in the galapagos
And we never had the time to play around with no stranglers
See them coming from afar me view with the binoculars
And they couldn't come puppy us
And mi know what a duppy was
And we never give a damn bout what yuh job or yuh hobby was
If ah see yuh by the hotel we woulda catch weh the lobby was
Even right upon the corner where me and where Robbie was
I mean the scene is so ravenous
Everybody is grabbing us
And they looking at us like they want to hurry some stab in us
So we join in the circle
No falter like erkel
Slap on the purple and be a terror thatโ€ฒs fabulous

So when yuh see meh bun up the place
Lee meh lemme bun up the place
And when yuh see meh tun up the place
Lee meh lemme tun up the place
Woi when yuh see meh bun up the place
Lee meh lemme bun up the place
Cause bredda i come from the place
Is either the mic or yuh gone in ah grave
Drop tune and make the children wine
Big women and the big men wine
Everybody do ah ting den wine
Even the mannequin dem wine
Rough time I from in them time
Yuh cyah have ah thin skin them time
Cyah have ah yellow intestine
Cyah have ah thin skin them time

I come from a different era
Thundercats and he man and she ra
Batman did spread like malaria
And diana from themyscira
Man with they big chain and bira
Means yuh was a lender or dealer
Old school adidas and fila
Ask meh bredren critchlow and wheeler
Promoter would only call for heavy weight
So yuh have to move like if you born a heavy weight
If they saying no yuh had to storm through any gate
Many place yuh know we bring corn to every plate
Life was on the low but now we have to elevate
Lemme see the rag and them start to levitate
Now me on the good and now me have to celebrate
Now we have to celebrate yea we have to celebrate

So when yuh see meh bun up the place
Lee meh lemme bun up the place
And when yuh see meh tun up the place
Lee meh lemme tun up the place
Woi when yuh see meh bun up the place
Lee meh lemme bun up the place
Cause bredda I come from the place
Is either the mic or yuh gone in ah grave
Drop tune and make the children wine
Big women and the big men wine
Everybody do ah ting den wine
Even the mannequin dem wine
Rough time I from in them time
Yuh cyah have ah thin skin them time

Cyah have ah yellow intestine
Cyah have ah thin skin them time

Overall Meaning

Bunji Garlin's song "The Struggle" paints a vivid picture of the struggles he faced while growing up in Trinidad and Tobago. In the first verse, Garlin highlights the fact that life in his neighborhood wasn't easy, and it wasn't a place for the faint of heart. He talks about the dangers of living in his community, where rival gangs and criminals were always looking for an opportunity to strike. Garlin notes the dichotomy of his world, where music and badness were the only options, with the streets being a far cry from the grassy fields usually associated with a simple life.

He goes on to tell the story of the crude environment he had to grow up in. Garlin explains how, in those times, they had to be sharp-witted and quick on their feet to survive, as a single wrong word could mean losing one's life. He contrasts the danger of living in his area with the release of performing on stage. Garlin talks about how he finds solace in performing, where he can let out his emotions and channel his energy into the performance.

Garlin's "The Struggle" is an ode to his roots, and it paints a vivid picture of the harsh conditions he had to face. However, it also shows how music gave him a path out of the harsh realities of his surroundings, and how he celebrates this triumph every time he performs.

Bunji took everyone back to calypso school with this one. This man is a lyrical genius and jus now just made this better. I am sure merchant would be proud he did this justice.
