Good Times
Burdon Eric Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I think of all the good times that I've wasted having good times
When I think of all the good time that 's been wasted having good times
When I was drinkin'
I should've been thinkin'
When I was fighting
I could've done the right thing
All of that boozin'
I was really losin'
Good times
Good times

When I think of all the good time that's been wasted having good times
When I think of all the good time that's been wasted having good times
All of my lying
I remember her crying
My useless talkin'
I couldv'e been walkin'
Instead of complainin'
I couldv'e been gainin'
Good times

Yes, here we all are having a jolly good time
And everything is working out fine, ha ha ha ha ha

Useless talkin'
All that walkin
All of my sinnin'
I could've been winnin'
I have it too easy
And its a beginning of good times

Good times

I said good times
Talking bout good times

Overall Meaning

The song "Good Times" by Eric Burdon is a reflective piece that explores the regrets of wasted opportunities and squandered moments. The opening lines, "When I think of all the good times that I've wasted having good times" set the tone of the song as the artist laments his own indulgences and the consequences that followed. His regret is compounded by the realization that the good times he was having were not what they seemed to be - they were, in fact, a waste of his life. He knows that he should have been more responsible and that he could have made better decisions.

The second verse continues in the same vein, as the singer reflects on the time he spent drinking, fighting, and generally behaving badly. Instead of enjoying the moment, he should have been more thoughtful and considerate of the people around him. His patterns of behavior were destructive, and he acknowledges that he could have done much better. The song's concluding lines, "I have it too easy, and it's the beginning of good times," suggest the singer's newfound resolve to take responsibility for his life and create a new path, one that doesn't include the reckless behavior that he now regrets.

One of the few rare movies that I can watch again, and again.

But also, thank the music industry for burying suck a treasure. I'm glad the first time I heard this it was in "Small Town Crime." Imagine how much it would suck if they would have picked a cliche song from the same music era.

I've struggled a lot with alcohol and drugs. This song hits home hard, all of that boozing, I was really losing...good times.

Grossly underrated song. Eric is basically begging everyone from the heart not to repeat the mistakes he made and you can feel the pain in his voice.
