Last Night
Burgh Chris de Lyrics

Where the fishing boats are lying on the shore,
The news had traveled fast and everyone went to be,
Where the mayor was making a speech,
And the crowd started cheering,
When he talked about the glory of it all,
And the boys coming home from the war;
And making music in the alleyways and bars,
From a house down in the old town came the sound of guitars,
Margarita was waiting inside,
With her long black hair hanging down beneath the red light,
And she smiled, for the boys coming home from the war,
The boys coming home from the war;
And they said we were heroes, they said we were fine,
We were kings in command, we had God on our side,
And we said "nothing will make us change in any way,
Since yesterday, we're just the same,
Since yesterday, nothing has changed,
Since yesterday, we're just the same,"
But I can feel there's a new kind of hunger inside,
To be satisfied, I saw it there last night;
Last night I was walking through the shadows,
Far away from all the music and the girls,
When I saw a soldier waiting with a woman in black,
And they stood without any word,
Just staring at a photograph of someone, and she began to cry,
For a boy left behind in the war,
Some boy left behind in the war;
And they said we were heroes, they said we were fine,
We were kings in command, we had God on our side,
And we said "nothing will make us change in any way,
Since yesterday, we're just the same,
Since yesterday, nothing has changed,
Since yesterday, we're just the same,"
But I can feel there's this new kind of hunger inside,
To be satisfied, I saw it there last night
In Burgh Chris de's song "Last Night", the singer walks through a harbor where he encounters a crowd gathered to hear a speech from the mayor about the boys coming home from war. The singer then describes the celebration happening in the streets and in bars, with the sound of guitars and the presence of a woman named Margarita who is waiting for the boys to return. The lyrics express the sentiment that the war heroes were celebrated as kings and heroes upon their return, but there is a sense of unease and a realization that something has changed.
The singer witnesses a soldier and a woman in black standing silently together, looking at a photograph of a boy who was left behind in the war. This moment is where the unease is most palpable, as the realization hits that war also leaves behind a toll of loss and heartbreak. The lyrics repeat the idea that "nothing has changed" since the return of the soldiers, but the final verse reveals a sense of hunger for something more.
The song touches on the complex emotions and aftermath of war, both the celebration of those who return and the pain of remembering those who did not. The line "we had God on our side" is a common phrase in war propaganda, adding to the sense that the celebration of war heroes is not necessarily the whole picture.

..od wczoraj zupełnie tacy sami...😊
Zeszłej nocy spacerowałem przez przystań
Gdzie łodzie rybackie leżały na wybrzeżu
Wieść szybko się rozeszła i wszyscy szli
Do miejsca w którym major miał wygłosić mowę
Tłum zaczął wiwatować
Kiedy mówił o chwale tego wszystkiego
I o chłopcach wracających do domów z wojny
Zeszłej nocy, oni tańczyli na ulicach
I tworzyli muzykę w wąskich uliczkach i barach
Dźwięk gitar docierał do starego miasta
Margarita czekała w środku
Z długimi czarnymi włosami sięgającymi poniżej czerwonego światła
Uśmiechnęła się, zobaczywszy chłopców wracających do domów z wojny
Chłopców wracających do domów z wojny
Żeby być zadowolonym, zobaczyłem go tam zeszłej nocy
Zeszłej nocy spacerowałem poprzez cienie
Z dala od tej całej muzyki i od dziewcząt
Kiedy zobaczyłem żołnierza z kobietą w czerni
A oni stali bez słowa
Żeby być zadowolonym, zobaczyłem go tam zeszłej nocy

I always imagined this song being extended into a film. Like how Copa Cabana was dramatised.
This would have been great if the video incorporated period costume (WWI or WWII) to south west England or perhaps southern US.
It is possible to imagine a small town celebrating the return of soldiers but with a population small enough to track down a single soldier from the battalion or regiment of that area.
Britain and Canada have regional units derived from where the recruits are drawn from.
This could have been much more visually.
The video is ok, but seeing a few fishing boats moored in a quiet Irish harbour overlooks the enormity of the moment.

God bless Chris de Burgh. Never in my life have I stumbled upon a musician that managed to sing with such precision, such emotion, such feeling. He's created a style of his own. I hereby call this Sing Softly with a Big Message. Pure genius, to put it short. :)
