Broken Glass
Burning Love Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

20-20 Hindsight, 1060 heart. I'm big on words but not so smart.
Only two eyes to keep the watch, two hands to lock the doors and
you gotta sleep some time, trust any obliging floor.
Four wheels and a window, take the blessing with the curse.
We've woken up to better days but we'll live through worse.
You can lock a door but that's all, here or anywhere.
Hungrier mouths will guide more desperate hands
through the best of all your best laid plans.

Do you think so little of time and space?
All these things can be replaced.
And do you think so much of wood and steel?
Only life and death are real - and fuck the rest.
I get homesick for this place
So I'll take the good with the broken glass.
Every time we say this could be the last time & every time we're right

I just want to be with my friends tonight.
And tomorrow they can take the rest.

Overall Meaning

In "Broken Glass," Burning Love muses on the transitory nature of life and possessions. The opening line "20-20 Hindsight, 1060 heart," suggests that the singer has gained clarity in retrospect, but still feels heartbroken. The next few lines touch on the limitations of human ability to protect ourselves and our possessions. We have only two eyes, two hands, and can't be vigilant all the time. We rely on things like locked doors, but even they are not foolproof. The singer acknowledges that better days have come and gone, but there will always be worse days to come.

The second verse takes a more philosophical turn, asking some existential questions. The lines "Do you think so little of time and space? / All these things can be replaced. / And do you think so much of wood and steel? / Only life and death are real - and fuck the rest," suggest that the things we tend to value and hold onto are ultimately insignificant in the grand scheme of things. It's easy to get caught up in material possessions, but the things that truly matter are intangible, like love and human connection.

The chorus finds the singer reflecting on the fragility of life, and recognizing the value of friendship. "Every time we say this could be the last time & every time we're right / I just want to be with my friends tonight. / And tomorrow they can take the rest." The song ends on a note of camaraderie and resilience in the face of life's uncertainties.

Line by Line Meaning

20-20 Hindsight, 1060 heart. I'm big on words but not so smart.
Looking back with perfect clarity and wisdom, but still feeling the ache of 1060 heartbreaks. I may talk a good game, but I'm not as clever as I seem.

Only two eyes to keep the watch, two hands to lock the doors and you gotta sleep some time, trust any obliging floor.
There's only so much one person can do to protect themselves, and eventually we all have to rest. Sometimes you have to rely on the kindness of strangers, even if it's just the floor beneath you.

Four wheels and a window, take the blessing with the curse.
Life is a combination of good and bad, and sometimes the best we can do is keep moving forward, even if the view isn't always pretty.

We've woken up to better days but we'll live through worse.
We've had highs and lows, and while we hope for more good times than bad, we know we can handle whatever life throws our way.

You can lock a door but that's all, here or anywhere.
We can do our best to protect ourselves and our belongings, but ultimately we're all vulnerable to the unexpected.

Hungrier mouths will guide more desperate hands through the best of all your best laid plans.
When people are struggling to survive, they may resort to desperate measures - even if it means disrupting the most well-thought-out plans.

Do you think so little of time and space? All these things can be replaced.
Don't underestimate the value of the moments we have and the spaces we inhabit. While material possessions can be replaced, they don't hold the same intrinsic worth.

And do you think so much of wood and steel? Only life and death are real - and fuck the rest.
Don't put too much stock in physical objects, which pale in comparison to the weight of life and death. The rest is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

I get homesick for this place. So I'll take the good with the broken glass.
Even when things aren't perfect, we can find comfort in familiar surroundings. We'll accept the bad with the good, even if it leaves us with scars.

Every time we say this could be the last time & every time we're right. I just want to be with my friends tonight.
We all know deep down that our time here is limited, and we want to make the most of the time we have left. Sometimes that means just being together with the people we care about.

And tomorrow they can take the rest.
We'll deal with whatever comes our way tomorrow - for now, we're just focused on being present with each other tonight.

@Muffin Vlogje:  Please never, ever mention a deplorable, embarrassingly talentless band like asking alexandria in the same breath as Burning Love. Chris Colohan is an awesome vocalist and has put hard work into the scene with a myriad of different bands. Everything he has done is head and shoulders above that racket.

Yeah and asking Alexandra
