Belly Of The Whale
Burning Sensations Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A nice breeze blows in
Whenever the big fella
Cracks a grin
And when the time and the pace is right,
We sit down,
Sip some bouillabaisse

Ahhh, I've gonna have me
A little fun
I've got a candle, I can get
A lot of reading done

Somewhere the sun is shining
(Shining, shining, shining)
On this world
But not for me
Two lovers' hearts a-rising
(Rising, rising, rising, rising)
Oh, how long before I'm free?

Ah, yes, I
Feel like Jonah
In the belly of the whale
I get so lonely
In the belly of the whale

(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yeah, I feel like Jonah
In the belly of the whale
(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
And I say now,
If we swim faster
(We're sure to come back)

Ahhh, you didn't please everyone
Got thrown off the boat
Before the trip was done
So with a smile on your face,
You disappeared
Without a trace
(Whoo)

Ahhh, I've gonna have us
A little fun
(Wow, down, down, down)
I've got a candle, we can get
A lot of reading done

Somewhere the sun is shining
(Shining, shining, shining)
On this world
But not for me
Two lovers' hearts a-rising
(Rising, rising, rising, rising)
Oh, how long before I'm free?

Ah, yes, I
Feel like Jonah
In the belly of the whale
Gotta keep my head up now
If I wanna come back
It gets so lonely
In the belly of the whale
You wanna know you belong here
But you've only got trapped
Hey!

(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Don't you feel like Jonah
In the belly of the whale?
(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
But I say now,
If we swim faster
(We're sure to come back)

Come back, come back,
Come back, come back, come back, come...

Somewhere the sun is shining
On this world
But not for me
Two lovers' hearts a-rising
(Rising, rising, rising, rising)
Oh, how long before I'm free?

Ah, yes, I...
(Yes I, yes I, yes I, yes I, yes I, yes I...)

I feel like Jonah
In the belly of the whale
Gotta keep my head up now
If I wanna come back
I get so lonely
In the belly of the whale
You wanna know you belong here
Yet you've only got trapped

(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yeah, it feels like Jonah
In the belly of the whale
(Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Did I tell you now?
If we swim faster
(We're sure to come back)

Come back, come back, come back, come back, come back...

Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh-oh
Whoooooooo-whoo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Burning Sensations' song Belly of the Whale evoke a sense of loneliness and feeling trapped. The singer compares their situation to that of Jonah in the biblical story of Jonah and the whale. The first verse paints a picture of finding enjoyment in simple things like a nice breeze and sipping bouillabaisse, but the overall tone of the song is one of melancholy. The lack of sunshine and the rising of two lovers' hearts serve as a stark contrast to the singer's own feelings of being trapped and alone.

The chorus repeats the comparison of being in the belly of the whale to feeling lost and disconnected. The repetition of the phrase "If we swim faster, we're sure to come back" could be interpreted as the singer trying to find a way out of their current state. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the feeling of being stuck and unable to escape.

I bought their EP and then self-titled LP when it came out. Their sound was different from other bands I listened to and I liked it very much. I wish they had put out more, but some bands just don't get traction with the listening audience and drop off the map. Good video from the early days of MTV (when they still did music videos).

ROOF TOP CAT

Wasn't there some members from the motels in this band?

Nowhere Cam

@ROOF TOP CAT Tim McGovern (sp?), the founder of the band was in The Motels. I don't know about any of the others.

This is Tim McGovern of The Motels fame before they got famous. He currently has a band in Bremerton, Washington called Knucklehead. My fellow musician and best friend plays drums with him.
