Not Guilty
Burning Spear Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The crime you want to charge
I-Man for, it's not possible,
And I am not guilty.
The crime you want to charge
I-Man for, it's not possible,
And I am not guilty.

I've been following all these
Great foreigners footsteps.
I've been following all these
Great foreigners footsteps.

Foreigners like honorable
Marcus Mosiah Garvey
Foreigners like honorable
Mr. Malcom X
Foreigners like honorable
Martin Luther King

Its they who payed
The way for I and I,
So therefore I and I
Could be recognized

Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them

Marcus Garvey was the first
Rastaman, from Jamaica.
And Malcom X was the
American Rastaman.
Martin Luther King,
He was a Rastaman.

Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them

They criticize the man's
Philosophy,
But they sould remember, he
Set an example.

The red, the black an green -
Marcus original.
The red, the black an green -
Marcus original.

The crime you want to charge
I-Man for, it's not possible,
And I am not guilty.
The crime you want to charge
I-Man for, it's not possible,
And I am not guilty.

Some people want you to
Be ignorant, and lack off speech
And live in fear.
I was only following all these
Great foreigners' footsteps, the
First voices of my people.

Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them
Jah send them, Jah send them

The crime you want to charge
I-Man for, it's not possible,
And I am not guilty.
The crime you want to charge
I-Man for, it's not possible,
And I am not guilty.

Mr. and Ms jury, use your
Discretion, I am not guilty

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Burning Spear's song "Not Guilty" address the idea of being falsely accused and misunderstood. The singer denies the crime that they are being charged with, claiming that it is "not possible," and expressing that they are "not guilty." They then go on to explain that they have been following in the footsteps of "great foreigners" who have come before them, such as Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King. These historical figures are cited as "foreigners" who have "set an example" and "paid the way" for the singer and their people, allowing them to be recognized and respected.

The singer also addresses the criticism that these "great foreigners" have faced for their philosophies and ideas, but reminds the listener that they have created a legacy and influenced many. The red, black, and green colors mentioned in the lyrics are associated with Marcus Garvey, who is credited as being the first Rastafarian from Jamaica. The singer states that they were only following in the footsteps of such influential figures, and that they are being falsely accused and misunderstood by those who wish to keep them ignorant and afraid.

Overall, the lyrics of "Not Guilty" express a sense of defiance and a belief in oneself and one's heritage, while also honoring and paying tribute to the great leaders who have come before them.
