Monsters
Burning Yesterday Lyrics

"Monsters"

Sitting in front of a TV screen, her mind controlled, by what she's seen
Minute by minute she grows so cold, this is what I need to be
I wonder what will happen to her, will she be strong or insecure?
It's wrong we don't do anything, this will never affect, who we're going to be

Save me from myself and the man that, I've become, save me from myself
And it's not over, not the way you, want it to be
See through the fog, break through the glass, be a monster, not a machine

Man and wife, lying in bed, they end a fight, she turns her head
Brokenhearted, love is fading, trying hard to hold on
He's tortured by the shame, but it's never gonna be the same
Fill your heart with lust and you'll lose sight, of love

Save me from myself and the man that, I've become, save me from myself
And it's not over, not the way you, want it to be
See through the fog, break through the glass, be a monster, not a machine

It's not what they say, they say
And it's not over, not the way you, want it to be
See through the fog, break through the glass, be a monster, not a machine

And it's not over, not the way you, want it to be
See through the fog, break through the glass, be a monster, not a machine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Burning Yesterday's "Monsters" explore themes of control, insecurity, and the struggle to maintain humanity in a world that often dehumanizes. The song depicts a character conditioned by media and external forces to become cold and machine-like. The singer wonders whether this person will be able to break free from this conditioning and become a strong, self-assured individual. The lyrics then shift to a married couple struggling with their own emotional turmoil. The man is wracked with shame over an unknown issue, while the woman is trying to hold onto their crumbling love. The song's central message urges both characters and the listener to break through the fog of confusion and societal conditioning and become a "monster," or a fierce, fully human being.

The song was likely inspired by the band's own experiences growing up in a world saturated with media and societal expectations. The lyrics reflect the struggles that many young people face in a world that often promotes conformity instead of individuality. Overall, the song's lyrics are a powerful reminder that it is possible to break free from conditioning and become a fully realized human being.

I met these guys around 2006/7 In Chadron NE. They played a random show here. I wonder what happened to them I cant seem to find much but during their set it started to rain and we helped them pack up and they gave my buddy a bunch of merch including an autographed copy of this album.
