The Waterfalls
Burning in Hell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Music: Marcelo, Lyrics: Leandro]

[Solo: Andreas Kisser]

The chief of a tribe had a daughter so pretty who'd be sacrificed to a God
But a warrior fell in love for the pretty Indian and run away with her

[Chorus:]
The God's revenge was very brutal
He turned her into a rock in the river
And the warrior in a tree on the edge of the abyss
Where he contemplates his love
In the bottom of the abyss it has a cave
Where this God guards the passionate lovers

When this God discovered about their escape
He twisted His body and became a huge snake
Diving wildly in the peaceful waters opening a hollow

[Chorus]

[Solo: Andreas Kisser]
[Solo: Geraldo]

At the top of that pit
He contemplates his love and he can never touch her face again
The pretty Indian is always bathed in a veil of clear and fresh waters to alleviate her pain

Every spring he throws flowers in the waters of the river, RIVER, RIVER
As a proof of his love

He opened a hollow in the river
Creating the big waterfalls
Where the escaper fell from a huge height disappearing eternally

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "The Waterfalls" by Burning in Hell tells the story of a tribe chief's daughter who was supposed to be sacrificed to a god, but a warrior fell in love with her and the two of them ran away together. The god was not happy with this and sought revenge by turning the daughter into a rock in the river and the warrior into a tree on the edge of an abyss. The warrior now contemplates his love from afar, unable to touch her face again. There is a cave at the bottom of the abyss where the god guards passionate lovers. When the god discovered the escape, he turned himself into a huge snake and created a hollow in the peaceful waters, causing the big waterfalls where the escaper fell from a huge height and disappeared eternally. Despite this tragic end, the warrior continues to throw flowers into the river every spring as a proof of his love.

The lyrics of this song are heavily influenced by Greek mythology and ancient legends. The story bears a strong resemblance to the Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus, in which Echo, a nymph, falls in love with Narcissus, the son of a river god, but cannot express her love due to a curse from Hera. Similarly, the warrior in the song is cursed to never be with his beloved, and both are trapped as objects of nature.
