Do You Know the Way to San Jose
Burt Bacharach Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you know the way to San Jose?
I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way.
Do you know the way to San Jose?
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose.

L.a. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years. how quick they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas

Do you know the way to San Jose?
They've got a lot of space. there'll be a place where I can stay
I was born and raised in San Jose
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose.

Fame and fortune is a magnet.
It can pull you far away from home
With a dream in your heart you're never alone.
Dreams turn into dust and blow away
And there you are without a friend
You pack your car and ride away

I've got lots of friends in San Jose

Do you know the way to San Jose?
Can't wait to get back to San Jose.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Burt Bacharach's song "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" reminisce about the singer's time spent in Los Angeles pursuing fame and fortune, and his eventual decision to return home to San Jose in search of peace of mind. The song talks about how L.A. is a big and fast-paced city, where people come to make it in show business. The allure of fame and potential stardom has brought many to the city with dreams in their hearts. However, the harsh reality is that many of these dreams turn into dust, leaving the dreamers alone without a friend. The lyrics remind us that it is important not to forget our roots and where we came from, and that sometimes, the peace of mind we seek can only be found by returning home.

The lyrics are rich in metaphorical meaning, as they use the idea of driving on a freeway, buying a car, and pumping gas to represent the pursuits of fame and fortune that the singer and many others in L.A. are involved in. The contrast between L.A.'s fast-paced life and San Jose's relaxed lifestyle is also a major theme in the lyrics, as the singer seeks refuge from the chaos of the city in San Jose's more peaceful atmosphere.

I have liked this song since 1968, I never thought I would be playing it while driving down I-80 from Sacramento then on to I-680 heading to San Jose, California is a beautiful state, especially when you go north over the golden gate bridge, very much like the south of France.
