Jeg faller
Burzum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Høyt deroppe står jeg i tiden;
I den grønne, vakre og varme,
Sterke trekronen, i hvite skyer,
Omgitt av de vakre og vennlige få.

Jeg faller.
Helt ned.
Høyt deroppe står jeg i tiden;
I toppen av verdenstreets krone.

Fra høyt deroppe faller jeg fra tiden;
Ned i det bunnløse, tomme og tidløse.

I fallet endrer treets bark form.
Grener og kvister, løv og nøtter,
Farrer forbi meg i voldsom fart.
Røttene og marken nærmer seg.

Tiden min renner bort og ned til et annet sted.

Inn i døden, ut fra døden.
Inn i livet, ut fra livet.
Nedover og over elven
Som ingen kilde har.
Inn i mørket, ut fra mørket;
Inn i kulden, ut fra kulden.
Gjennom tiden, ut fra tiden;
Derinne hvor guddommene smiler.

Jeg drikker fra glemselens elv,
Ror tørrskodd over hatets hav;

Seiler med vinden i ryggen,
Til maktenes ende, begynnelse og mening.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Burzum's song Jeg faller (I am falling) depict a person standing high up in a tree, surrounded by beauty and friendliness, but eventually falling down into the void of nothingness. The first verse describes the person standing in a strong and beautiful tree crown, surrounded by friendly birds. However, the chorus introduces the element of falling, as if the person was no longer able to maintain their position and was forced to drop down.

The second verse repeats this idea of standing high up in the tree, emphasizing the top of the world's tree crown. However, this time the chorus describes the person falling into nothingness and timelessness. The imagery of falling is further explored in the third verse, where the person notices how the tree bark changes shape as they plummet down, and how they pass through branches, leaves, and roots. The falling ends up somewhere else, somewhere not belonging to time, representing death and rebirth.

The final stanza talks about the person drinking from the river of forgetfulness and crossing the sea of hate, sailing towards the power's end, beginning, and meaning. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for starting anew, shaking off the shackles of one's previous life, and reaching enlightenment. The song is an introspective journey through the meaning of life and death, and the transition between them.
