As with most aspiring musical groups, By the Tree got their start playing a series of small venues — predominantly churches — throughout the southern and southwestern United States. Their near-constant touring cultivated a sizeable fan base.

In 1999 they released two independent, self-produced CDs, which they sold at their concerts. By 2001, these two CDs had sold a combined 30,000 units, which more than recouped their production costs, and additionally brought them to the attention of the Gospel music industry.

The band eventually signed with Fervent Records, part of the BMG music publishing company. Their first national U.S. commercial recording was Invade My Soul. The album charted in the Billboard Top 40 in the Contemporary Christian and Independent categories. The album eventually went on to win two Dove Awards: The album itself won Best Modern Rock/Alternative Album, and the album's title track won Best Recorded Song.

The band has gone through numerous lineup changes since signing with Fervent. Drummer Aaron Blanton joined the group prior to the recording of Invade My Soul, and bassist Ben Davis joined in 2002 for the recording of These Days. Original member Kevin Rhoads left the band shortly after the release of These Days and was replaced by Charlie Goddard, who left the band in 2003 to join the Jeff Deyo Band.

By the Tree has released four albums under the Fervent label, and they remain one of the more popular acts in Contemporary Christian music.

Chuck Dennie now lives in Franklin, TN with his wife Joanne.

I was in Houston during Hurricane Ike. Pine trees were the first to fall. Shallow roots on top of a long trunk. They are built to stand in a dense pine forest. When you clear out a forest wind accelerates through the clearings and you might learn the dangers of Bernoulli's principle the hard way.

That's not true what you describe. Pine-trees are made for windy conditions and they only fall if they ate I'll or the ground not "firm " enough. Pine-trees have not only a pole root, they also have three times longer "flat roots" which stabilize tge trees in the wind. In total the tree has always balance, is going flexible with the wind but is not falling.... Maybe the trees in Augusta are different to normal pine-trees but normally they are perfect mad for strong winds. In the garden of my property are a lot of pine-trees and i can watch them "dancing" with the wind but not falling.
It's a great luck that nobody got injuries or lost his life. Trees who fall unexpected are immense dangerous and every year people die in Forrest's. Thank God that nothing happened!

@Michael Score Clearly you were not in Hurricane Ike so you don't know. The pines uprooted and the Oak trees broke in half because Oaks have gigantic roots. The Oak trees and pine trees shared the same ground so the ground was not a difference. Just because you have pine trees that have not fallen does not mean they would not be the first to fall when the winds get high enough. I agree that it is so good nobody got hurt. I'm pulling for Sam. I bet he has played a lot of golf in the piney woods of Texas like myself which is very similar to Augusta Georgia. Cheers.

@Steven Hensley Thanks for the answer! But what i wrote you, you can find in every science magazine. Pine-trees are Mädel for windy conditions and the flat roots balance the trees. Pole rooted trees are falling much more than flat rooted trees. Maybe the pine trees in Augusta are different to these we have in Europe. Bur for example near the costs where the windy conditions are normal, pine-trees are standing free in the wind but pole rooted trees not growing there....
Sure, winds conditions are not always the same. Sometimes you have 10 or 11 Beaufort wind and the pine-trees aren't still standing. But if the wind is grows up to 15 Beaufort then they fall. And you are right, the wind catches the thick needles and crown of them! To protect the people or in my case the property if my neighbour's, i let remove some benches so that the wind can't catch the whole tree. And that maybe also would be the job of the team in Augusta, to remove parts of the pine-tree crown so that the crowd is protected.

@Michael Score The Pine can bend but it has to bend up the whole length of the trunk at the same time. Stripping the tree's lower limbs means the entire force of any wind caught by the remaining limbs is absorbed in a much smaller part of the trunk. Trees like coconut Palm are designed for this action. Pines are not. Plus, stripping the limbs means the low-pressure zone created by moving air is able to attach itself directly to the trunk which amplifies the force of the prevailing wind. This tree appeared to already be in the autumn of its life but without such over-maintenance and increasing strength of weather factors due to global warming/climatic change, it could have survived for at least a decade longer. But another factor is human ignorance. Golf courses are natural bottlenecks for air movement but the designers are clearly more focused on the aspects of the game and audience requirements than nature's own physical requirements. Stripping the lower limbs of an entire wood simply for better viewing of a ball too small to see anyway is asking for trouble. And I wouldn't be surprised if the course managers did all they can to block any environmental information from being taken heed of simply for audience pleasure. After all, golfers are just walking billboards.

Pine trees grow tall in dense forests here in the US, growing tall and thin to reach the sun over a long period of time. They are protected from wind by the density of the forest. When the forest is cleared like the fairways of a golf course or a living community, Bernoulli's principle comes into play. The trees that fashioned themselves to survive in the dense forest no longer have the protection. If you plant a pine in an open area they grow differently and much shorter with longer branches and longer roots. Plants in general take shape based on their suroundings. It only takes a 50 mph gust to knock over a stand alone pine if it was matured originally in a dense forest. This is well documented by scientists in the USA and I have seen it first hand.

Fake manmade landscape, and tree roots probably cut back because they were "unsightly". Augusta National is nothing more than a super-fancy miniature golf course, with every single thing artificial, manmade, overfertilized, over-insecticide-ed, etc. etc.

I will never forget a business trip to Augusta GA where I drove by the walls on the outside of the National ... the dissonance in terms of poverty and lifestyle is seriously disturbing. Pretty much ruined my enthusiasm for the Masters. Great golf, but seriously messed up people.
