@Jorge Callico I won't deny that yeah, sometimes criminals benefit from these protections (although of course, at the moment you read them these rights, you don't know they are guilty yet). But I'd add two caveats:

The first is that innocent people can be coerced into confessing surprisingly often. Research suggests this actually happens a lot, not to mention those who take plea deals because they can't afford the risk that they would be wrongfully found guilty. Wrongful convictions do happen, for all sorts of random or systemic reasons. Heck, this whole film is about a man who was wrongfully convicted.

But mainly rulings like Miranda are necessary because everyone deserves a fair shot at the justice system. Everyone, innocent or guilty.

Innocent or guilty, you get a lawyer
Innocent or guilty, you are told your rights
Innocent or guilty, you should get a fair trial.

One of the best movies ever made, hands down, no question.

But… I think we need to recognize just how quaint it is, how anachronistic it feels, to think that a warden and captain of the guard for a prison would ever be arrested and convicted for murder of an inmate in their ward.

That happens literally every day, all over the US. And we know it does. And we do nothing.

No punishment. No consequences. Just a shrug by the general population of the country as we write it off as either something that simple IS, or as something the inmates deserve, or else they wouldn’t be there in the first place.

And it happens again tomorrow.

While we bask in the masterpiece that is The Shawshank Redemption, we must remember it’s moral: human beings are no less so for having been convicted of a crime, rightly or wrongly. They deserve dignity, and hope. It is up to us to give it to them.

During a test screening, a number of audience members screamed at the suicide snd afterwards said "why did you hsve to make it so gory?!" The team played it back and showed them, the only time you see blood is when he's laying back in the chair.

Not a drop of blood shown. Its all in the imagination. The making of this masterpiece is fascinating if you ever get the chance.

My favourite is the car that drives Red to Buxton at the end. Its a red car. People ask Darabont "Is that to signify Red's first steps into freedom?" Darabont says "Nope. Its just the first guy who answered our ad for an antique car it happened to be red. But, if you want to draw symbolism go right on ahead. But officially no. It was just a red car!"

Attention to detail: At 2:11 you can see that Hadley is being 'read his rights' in the familiar form of the Miranda Warning, and the agent is literally reading them off of a sheet. Andy escapes in 1966, which is the year that Miranda v Arizona was ruled on by the Supreme Court. The agent is reading the rights because they are a brand new thing that people wouldn't have memorised yet.

My dad let me watch this movie with him as a kid. I always imagined a stinger scene, where Andy and Red sat around a campfire on the beach that night, drinking beer while laughing their asses off as Andy tells him how he orchestrated the entire takedown ergo Red can tell us about this bit of the story. $370,000 in 1966 would be just shy of 3 million USD today.

Don't forget that he's in Mexico with all that money under a new name and likely using it to better that community with his project. It would've been nice had Andy's record been expunged of the double-murders to go along with everything, but we wouldn't have gotten the nice beach shot to tell us of his new life south of the border.

@triple_12 Good point, hon. Living in Mexico at that time on USD was obscenely cheap (William S Burroughs reference this in his novel Junky) which is why it was a popular vacation spot for Americans. That 370 grand ensured he could do whatever the hell he wanted. While not a legal expert by any means, the death of Tommy Williams also killed Andy's chances of clearing his name. He was the only witness to the confession and would finger the real perp in a lineup. A court would be highly skeptical of Andy's claim without Tommy and most likely dismiss it. A prosecutor could make a compelling case that this was just a callous attempt by a murderer to squeak outta his sentence on shaky evidence. That's why Andy planned his escape all these years. He knew what sort of man his boss, the warden, was and planned accordingly. Also he was liable for the money laundering scheme. Even if he came forward, the best Andy could hope for would be a commutation of his sentence ( very iffy) but still have to serve time for escaping prison.

Now there's 20 seconds of great script writing from 1:00 to 1:20.

At 1:00 we don't know what's in the package, but we see it in the out-tray. Next we see it being opened, but there's no indication of where - until we hear the lady answering the phone. At that point we can guess the contents of the package, especially given the changing facial expression of the editor reading Andy's letter. Then we have the contents of the package confirmed when Norton slams down his copy of The Daily Bugle.

Outstanding storytelling in minimum time with no wasted effort!

Amen. I remember seeing Tim Robbins in Cadillac Man with Robin Williams around May, 1990. Then I saw Tim Robbins later that same year in Jacob's Ladder around November, 1990. Based on those two first appearances I knew Tim was an exceptional actor. But it was several years later in 1996 that I saw Tim Robbins with Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption -- which blew my mind just how good Tim Robbins' acting was.

Don’t forget fear. Norton feared someone exposing his schemes because they were being forced to bribe him. That caused him to become overly reliant on Andy. If Andy walked, not only would Norton lose out on his stream of easy income, but he’d also have to live with the fact that the source of said income also had easy access to incriminating information. Thus Norton acted out of fear, causing Andy to be locked up in solitary, killing Tommy, and allowing Andy to exact his revenge.

This scene is so satisfying because the Warden is getting a taste of his own medicine,
earlier in the movie when Andy was blasting the opera music, the Warden and his cronies
were beating on the door, threatening to break it down and apprehend him.
Now the Warden is in Andy's position, a little poetic justice right before he punched his own ticket.

Granted though, that wouldn't really make sense. He did commit suicide though, which is a pretty major sin so not spot in Heaven for him but there is a nice little vacant spot in Hell for Norton.

Here's the thing, once the warden knew Andy had escaped would he not have realised that he would be heading to the banks to get the money. Granted, there would have been questions from the police as to why Andy would be heading to 12 different banks but chances are Andy would have been caught.

I agree. In the narration, it stated that when the tunnel was discovered, Andy was visiting the banks. Banks opened at 9 or 10 AM. Was morning roll call/wake-up in the prison that late in the morning? I would think roll-call would be at 7 or 8 AM, and the tunnel discovered before the banks opened. The warden could have sent Hadley and some guards to watch the banks. They could have quietly captured Andy and brought him back to the prison.

Norton knew that even on remand,his life would've been hell in prison. He would have not been spared a day without a beating in general population. Corrupt officials get a terrible time inside. Hadley, as a guard captain would also have a bad time not just from the prisoners but the guards. He was supposed to set a standard of behaviour for the guards to follow. Instead,he behaved like a bully. Like any bully, whose caught by a higher authority Hadley was weak and cried when his crimes were exposed to the world.
