A Different World
Cécile Corbel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look up at the sky if you feel lonely
This is the same sky I stare at too
I remember the day
 your eyes fell on me
So shining eyes
now I'm wondering

Why are you sad?
You knew I had to leave
'Cause I live in a different world
Still I'm not so far away from you

I feel so small down in the garden
My mind is restless when I think of you
We're so alike and so different
Not only friends so promise me

Please don't be sad
Although it's time to leave

If this is true love
Please save a place in your heart for me

Overall Meaning

The song "A Different World" by Cecile Corbel is a melancholic tune that evokes a sense of longing and distance between two individuals. The opening verse suggests that the singer is reaching out to someone who is feeling lonely and shares a connection with them through the same sky they both gaze upon. The following lines reveal that this person is someone who once had a romantic interest in the singer, and the memory of their shining eyes inspires the singer's curiosity about their current state of mind. The first chorus acknowledges the distance between the two by stating that the singer lives in a "different world," but still insists that they are not so far away from each other.

The second verse introduces a garden, which serves as a metaphor for the singer's mind, which is depicted as restless and consumed with thoughts of this person. The lyrics describe the similarities and differences between the two individuals, who are more than just friends but not quite lovers. The final plea in the second chorus begs the person not to be sad, despite the fact that the singer must leave. If their connection is true love, the singer asks that they save a place in their heart for them.

In summary, "A Different World" presents a bittersweet reflection on the complexities of relationships and the distance that can arise between individuals. The song explores both the similarities and differences between two people who are connected on a profound level but live in different worlds. The lyrics weave together themes of love, longing, and separation in a beautifully poignant manner.

Greetings from Italy! I've never heard a nicer voice than Cécile Corbel's. She is absolutely my favourite singer. When our French teacher asked us to pick a french city to do a research on, everybody did big and famous cities like Paris or Nice. But I just had to do Pont-Croix, where Cécile was born. It's a very little town, but I found out it is really lovely.
