Born to a large impoverished family, Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband René Angélil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. In 1990, she released the anglophone album Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world.
Dion had first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest.Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to CBS Records Canada in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of Angélil, she achieved worldwide fame after signing with Epic Records and releasing several English albums along with additional French albums, becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music history. However, in 1999 at the height of her success, Dion announced a temporary retirement from entertainment in order to start a family and spend time with her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. She returned to the top of pop music in 2002 and signed a three-year (later extended to almost five years) contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.
After performing in 25 countries during the Taking Chances World Tour which ended in February 2009 (one year after it began) she took another 2 year hiatus, focusing on expanding her family. After 6 in-vitro tries she gave birth to twin boys Nelson and Eddy in October 2010. In the meantime she announced her return to Vegas, her new show simply named "Céline" premièred on March 15th 2011 to spectacular reviews by media and audience.
Dion's music has been influenced by genres ranging from rock and R&B to gospel and classical. While her releases have often received mixed critical reception, she is renowned for her technically skilled and powerful vocals. Dion is the best selling Canadian artist of all time; and her album D'eux is the best selling francophone album of all time. Dion is regarded as one of pop music's most influential voices. Linda Lister describes Dion as a reigning Queen of Pop for her influence over the record industry during the 1990s. On a cultural level, Dion is credited for introducing francophone music to many non-francophone countries around the globe. Dion is also credited for both revitalizing and revolutionizing the entertainment scene in Las Vegas with the gargantuan successes of her residencies there. She managed to re-popularize the Las Vegas "residency" as a desirable way for top artists to essentially tour in place, letting their fans come to them. Over the years, fellow established icons such as Britney Spears, Elton John, Bette Midler, Rod Stewart, Cher and Shania Twain followed suit.
Where Is The Love
Céline Dion Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All the heavens would call them angels around
Stop the tears from troubled sky's, from
Falling (falling, falling)
If ever the river could whisper your name
Would the choices you make still be the same?
Like a flower that dies from angry rain
Where is the love that lets the sunlight in to start again (start again)
The love that sees no color lines?
Life begins with love
So spread your wings and fly (where is)
Guide your spirit safe and sheltered
A thousand dreams that we can still believe (where is)
If ever a boy stood on the moon
Carrying all of his treasures from the stars
To a rainbow which leads to where we are
Together we'd chase the sun
Where is the love that lifts my brother's voice to the skies (to the skies)
The love that answers a mother's cry? (where is the love, where is)
Life begins with love
So spread your wings and fly (where is)
Guide your spirit safe and sheltered
A thousand dreams that we can still believe (where is)
A boy stood on the moon (where is)
The ancient souls can still discover
A thousand dreams that we can still believe (where is)
(Where is the love, where is the love?) Ooh
That we can still believe
We can still believe (where is the love, where is the love?)
We can still believe
The lyrics of Celine Dion's song "Where Is the Love" depict the struggle of a woman who yearns for a deeper and more meaningful relationship with her partner. The first stanza describes how the partner tries to win her affection through insincere gestures, such as buying her flowers, giving her compliments, and getting her drunk. However, the woman is not convinced and sees through his facade, as she knows all the moves in his game. She accuses him of hiding his true emotions and stealing from her, and feels that he lacks the genuine love that she desires.
In the second stanza, the woman tries to communicate her need for commitment and honesty in a straightforward manner, but her partner responds by talking in circles and insisting on his own principles. Despite being impressed by his charisma and charm, she resists the temptation to fall for him and realizes that without love, there is no point in continuing their affectionate but shallow relationship.
Overall, the lyrics convey a message about the importance of love and authenticity in relationships. The woman recognizes that while temporary pleasures such as ecstasy might be enjoyable, they are not enough to sustain a fulfilling bond. She desires a partner who is willing to put his heart into the relationship and make her feel valued as an individual.
Line by Line Meaning
You bought me flowers and you sold me a line
You used fake promises and sweet gestures to win me over
You gave me compliments and too much wine
You tried to manipulate me by showering me with compliments and alcohol
I've played that game, I know all the moves
I have been in this situation before, and I am aware of how this type of behavior works
You show emotion but you hide what you feel
You pretend to care about me, but you are actually hiding your true intentions
You play the innocent but I've watched you steal
You act like you have done nothing wrong, but I have seen you take advantage of others before
I rest my case, you stand accused
I have presented my evidence, and now you must face the consequences of your actions
But I must confess I was quite impressed
Despite your flaws, I was still charmed by you
You seduced me with your easy charm
Your smooth talking and charisma had a strong effect on me
And I must admit I could fall for it
Although I know better, I am still tempted by your charm
But if love is out of the question
If you cannot truly love me, there is no point in continuing this relationship
There's no point to this affection
Our relationship serves no purpose without genuine love
I gotta have more than ecstasy
I need more than just physical pleasure to be satisfied in a relationship
Make me believe I'm all you'll ever need
Convince me that you truly love me and that I am enough for you
'Cause if love is out of the question
If you cannot truly love me, there is no point in continuing this relationship
Put a little heart in your intention
Show me that you genuinely care and that you have good intentions
You talk in circles when I need a straight line
You are evasive and avoid giving me direct answers
You've got your principles and I've got mine
We have different values and beliefs that may clash in our relationship
We all need commitment, that's all I ask
I need your commitment to make our relationship work
Is that a crime?
Is it too much to ask for commitment in a relationship?
It makes no sense to carry on like this
There is no logic in continuing our relationship without love and commitment
If there's nothing between us you don't know what you'll miss
If we end our relationship, you may regret what you have lost
No love
Our relationship lacks genuine love
Baby it's true
This is the reality of our relationship
