Beauty and the Beast
Céline Dion Peabo Bryson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh

Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly
Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the beast

Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
And ever just as sure
As the sun will rise
Oh
Oh

Mmm, oh-oh-oh
Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever just as sure
As the sun will rise
Oh, oh, oh

Tale as old as time (ooh-ooh)
Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun
Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast

Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast

Oh, oh, oh
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh

Beauty and the beast

Overall Meaning

Dear Celine Dion,

The song "Beauty and the Beast" by Peabo Bryson is a beautiful tale about two unlikely individuals falling in love. The opening lines "Tale as old as time, true as it can be" suggests that this is a story that has happened over and over through generations and the love between the two is as real as it can be. The next lines "Barely even friends, then somebody bends, unexpectedly" introduces us to the characters in the song - Belle and the Beast. They start off as acquaintances and then the Beast starts to develop feelings for Belle, a change that happens unexpectedly.

As the song progresses, we hear of "just a little change, small to say the least, both a little scared, neither one prepared" indicating that the two characters in the song are both scared and unsure of how this love that they are feeling will turn out. The next verse "Ever just the same, ever a surprise, ever as before and ever just as sure as the sun will rise" highlights the fact that no matter what may happen in their relationship, it will still be beautiful just like the sunrise.

Towards the end of the song, we hear the lines "Bittersweet and strange, finding you can change, learning you were wrong, certain as the sun rising in the east" suggesting that despite the unexpected nature of their relationship, they both have changed for the better because of it. Overall, "Beauty and the Beast" is a timeless song that tells a beautiful love story.
