A succession of singles and albums established Dr. C.J. Johnson as one of the country’s foremost hymnologists. His recordings were at once anachronistic and refreshing at a time when gospel music focused squarely on hard-singing leads and heavy instrumental backing. Dr. Johnson’s commitment to the old time sound – straight congregational singing with occasional slaps of the tambourine – earned him an invitation to sing at the White House on three separate occasions.

The lyrics to C.J. Johnson’s “You Better Run” describe the singer’s sense of restlessness and indecision about a romantic relationship. The first verse contains a reference to women wearing one-piece clothing, which is an object of curiosity for the singer. He wishes for the wind to blow a little harder, suggesting a desire for change or movement. The singer feels like he’s been back and forth, saying he’s not the master of his fate. He repeats the word “휙” many times, which is an onomatopoeic expression of a sudden movement or change.
The second verse continues with the singer’s conflicted feelings, alternating between indulging in the pleasure of the moment and worrying about the future. He’s trying to release the constraints of his clothing and himself, but he’s caught between a desire for eternity and the fact that nothing is eternal. He repeats the lines “너가 원하면 너에게 갈게” and “너가 원하면 너를 떠날게” (If you want, I'll come to you; If you want, I'll leave you), implying that he’s willing to do anything to satisfy the girl. He then describes the pain he’s feeling, which could be from his lack of direction or from his relationship. He eventually declares that he has to leave and apologizes.
Overall, the lyrics suggest a sense of dissatisfaction and uncertainty about the singer’s relationship and his own life. It's a complicated love story that captures the listener's attention.

God called Moses on the mountain top
And he placed the law in Moses heart
And then he stuck this commandment in
Moses mind
Then said Moses don't you leave my
children behind
Well you better run, run run run
You better run, better run, better run
Oh you better run to the city of Ninveha you better run
Well people believe and they think they
done right
You can pick up your bible and read it
tonight
You can read in Genesis you will understand
That Methuselah, he was the oldest man
Well he lived nine hundred and sixty nine
And then died and gone to heaven in good due time
Well you better run, run run
You better run, better run, better run
Oh you better run to the city of Ninveha you better run
Well Paul's command for the Pharisees
O well old Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews
Ah he came to Jesus
he came by night
He said I want to be born into the heavenly
sight
Then came Christ spoke to Nicodemus as a friend
Said if you want to go to heaven you must
be born again
Oh well old Nicodemus didn't understand
How could a man be born when he was so old
Well you better run, run run
You better run, better run, better run
Oh you better run to the city of Ninveha you better run
Well beautiful sampson from his birth
He was the strongest man that ever lived on earth
Ah one day Ah Sampson was walking along
Oh well sampson's strength was never
found out
But Delilah came and sat on his knee
Said ah please tell me where your strength might be
He told her my strength lies in my hair
You jus shave a my head just as clean as my hand
And my strength will become as a natural man
Well you better run, run run
You better run, better run, better run
Oh you better run to the city of Ninveha you better run

You can't listen to this without two things happening simultaneously:

@MisterCrazyLegs619
my great grandmama'....couldn't read or write, God rest her soul. But she knew this song backwards to front and back again, and she would ENUNCIATE every word, like she knew how to write 'em. Every Sunday, before Rev Murray (at her church in Cherryville, NC) would step to the podium to preach, all he had to do was just look in my great grandmother's direction...and she would HIT IT. And you talk about folk, comin' up outta their seats. Grandma Mattie, would let 'em have it. I love this song.
