Ariana was a shining highlight in this remake. She had HUGE shoes to fill, as Rita was ICONIC in this role. She not only filled them, she found a way to make Anita her own instead of trying to just copy, which some might have been tempted to do.

She was utterly brilliant and fully deserved that Oscar.

The two lead characters are Tony and Maria who was played by Natalie Wood who is sadly no longer with us RIP. In this version Bernardo wasn't forced to move away from PR, he chose to immigrate to America so why would he suddebly hate America and "want to go back to San Juan"?
The original is iconic I don't care for the changes Spielberg made in this remake.

I love the fact that this version of America took place in different locations where the characters walk around the streets than the original which was just being in a rooftop. Both Ariana and Rita were stupendous for their role as Anita. The sassiness, the sheer amount of talent, the beauty, the elegance, their dancing, and just their smiles alone really makes the character shine.
And if you ask me, Rita Moreno looks as beautiful today as she did back in the 60s.

I literally started crying during the middle of this watching Ariana Debose perform. I didn't think I get emotional, but it's amazing to see an Afrolatina front and in center of a major film about Latinos. I'm 67 and this musical was my childhood. I didn't expect to respond emotionally to this but I teared up big time. I'm still trying to sort it all out. I was critical of Speilberg doing a remake, and I was not that infatuated by Anita here. But the look and feel and all the excitement of this, taking it to the streets and all, and when the men started dancing......I dunno.....it just triggered something deep. There is so much to take in. Thanks to everyone for this great production number!

I'm not a huge fan of musicals. In fact, I eschewed them for a while. I'm more about spy thrillers, box office blockbusters, and action movies. But I absolutely love this piece. It just epitomizes passion and at the same time delivers a message about the duality of life in America, namely the conflict between where things are and where they can be. This is one of the best pieces of filmmaking to ever exist.

West Side Story is getting a lot of praise but has done as bad financially. I haven't checked Tick Tick Boom's numbers if they're even available but all the recent theatrical live action musical adaptations have done poorly which is sad. I at least hope the critical acclaim gets DeBose, Faist (and Zegler too) more good roles in the future.

I thought someone probably said it already, but I'm not seeing it in the comments, so I'll say it... the older seller at 1:30 who gives Bernardo a dirty look is David Bean, who played the original Tiger in the original West Side Story. Someone working on the remake came across him in a family restaurant he helps run in New York, had a nice chat with him, and contacted Steven Spielberg with the idea of him, like Rita Moreno, making a cameo appearance in the film -- and the rest is history!

The original scene was probably my favorite scene in the 61' film, and they made it even better here. I already love the song and the back and forth between Anita and Bernardo, but the way they moved it from being a little party on a roof to all over the neighborhood, showing all the life and the people, it managed to be both bigger and BETTER. Also the chemistry between Ariana Debose and David Alvarez is absolutely sizzling.

I had doubts about watching a remake on such a wonderful classic as the 1961 version, perhaps out of respect and loyalty to the original somehow. I think others have felt the same, BUT then I saw this 2021 version and was blown away. Both are SUPERB!

This is how you film a musical. Very few visual cuts, just like the good old days. It's so hard to appreciate the choreography when there are unnecessary cuts. Long-duration, uninterrrupted shots are a must in musicals on the silver screen imo.

It’s about two street gangs of different ethnic origins fighting over their “turf”.
The moral of the story is that hate can lead to very terrible outcomes, that love has no boundaries, and at the end shows members of the two gangs coming together and putting aside their differences after realizing the horrors their hate has led to.
It is still very relevant today.
Perhaps you should watch it. You might learn something.
