1) CCS ake C.C.S. (or Collective Consciousness Society) was a British group led by blues guitarist Alexis Korner.

Consisting largely of session musicians, and created primarily as a recording outfit, the band included Peter Thorup, vocals; Alan Parker, guitar; Harold McNair, flute; Herbie Flowers, bass; Roger Coulam, keyboards; Barry Morgan, drums; plus Don Lusher and Bill Geldard, trombone. Some of the musicians were also members of Blue Mink.

The band is best remembered for their instrumental version of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love, which got into in the UK singles chart in 1970, and was used as the theme tune for the popular BBC pop programme "Top of the Pops" for most of the 1970s, and, in a remixed version, between 1998 and 2003.

Their song, 'Tap Turns On The Water', featured in the BBC Three comedy sketch show 'Tittybangbang' and another song, 'Brother', was used by DJ Tom Browne during his tenure of the BBC Chart Countdown programme in the seventies.

I well remember Alexis Korner coming to our school to play in a music day there. This was one song on his playlist.
Ten minutes before he was due to play he realised he had left the disk, which he planned to use as a backing, at home.
I got a special "thank you " mention from him, on stage, because I lent him my copy. When I got it back that afternoon, it was Autographed, in a large brown envelope, with a letter of thanks and a £10 note.
I still have the record, envelope, letter and even that same £10 note.
RIP Alexis.
His daughter, Sappho, was in my class at that school.

I don´t if you´re meaning Led Zeppelin as the original or the who actually wrote it, Willie Dixon? But I really like CCS:s version. But of cource Page wrote the riff and that´s what CCS uses with a flute so.... But unfortunately Zeppelin had a lot of covers on their two first albums that they credited themselves as writers instead of admitted, like Deep Purple, that they where surging their own sound and that it took a couple of albums before they started writing better than their fair share of covers.

Sorry, David, it's not Ian Anderson, he had his career going with Jethro Tull at that moment. I met them in Odense, Denmark, in 1970. At CCS Harold McNair played the flute, and danish guitarist Peter Thorup did the vocals. I heard Peter Thorup playing with Alexis Corner on Bornholm, forming the band New Church. They had just been supporting The Stones' Free Concert in Hyde Park, 5 July 1969.

+Andrew Swift Watching the BBC4 repeat of TOTP Xmas Day 1979 last Xmas the version used sounded exactly like this. So did the 30 to 21 / 21 to 20 countdowns in weekly editions from after the Musicians' Union dispute ended summer 1980 through to the 899th TOTP in 1981. However the BBC4 repeats of TOTP Xmas 1976, 1977 and 1978 the opening theme was a noticeably different arrangement to this (and weekly editions whilst they still used this over the start of show 30 to 1 chart rundown - I think that was up till the end of 1977) - that alternative arrangement must be the one you're thinking of.

+TumbleTower correct, the music over the chart rundown from August 1974 (after the first MU strike) until July 1977 was the TOTP Orchestra's version, after which time TOTP reverted to playing a song from the chart over the chart rundown as they had done previously from 1970-74.

They may have done what bands used to do when they appeared on TOTP at one time - the rule was that the track had to be re-recorded in the BBC studios, so the bands would go in, fart around for a few hours, then come out with a copy of the original track master tape, and say "Here you are!"

Possibly because they were looser with "performing rights". Wikipedia says the TOTP version was actually recorded by the BBC orchestra, not CCS.
