Pendulum
CLIMB Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's the point in jumping
If you land in the same place
What's the point in drawing
When there's nothing left to face
The pain in your eyes was tremendous
Screaming is so obsolete
Is that why you stay quiet
And the rest refuse to eat
End of my fingers bloody
Bitten right to the bone
Is this the dream that we work for
And if you got fangs still
Baby you can chew it
Just give yourself a try
Pain won't stop shooting
The pain in your eyes was tremendous
Screaming is so obsolete
Is that why you stay quiet
And the rest refuse to eat
End of my fingers bloody
Bitten right to the bone

Is this the dream that we work for
Devotion

Overall Meaning

The song "Pendulum" by CLIMB is a poignant reflection on the struggle to find purpose and meaning in life amidst pain and adversity. The lyrics suggest a sense of futility and hopelessness, with the repeated refrain of "What's the point?" conveying a sense of existential despair. The image of a pendulum, swinging back and forth, serves as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of life, as well as the feeling of being trapped in an endless cycle of pain and frustration.

The lyrics suggest that no matter what one does, the result is the same - landing in the same place, facing nothing new, and feeling the same pain. The line "Is that why you stay quiet/And the rest refuse to eat" implies a sense of detachment and isolation, perhaps due to the inability to find comfort or meaning in the world.

The repeated refrain of "the pain in your eyes was tremendous" adds to the sense of sadness and despair. The image of bloody fingers and bitten bones reinforces the idea of physical and emotional pain. Yet, despite the bleakness of the lyrics, there is a note of hope in the final lines, with the call to "give yourself a try" and the suggestion that devotion to a cause or purpose may offer a way out of the cycle of pain.

Overall, "Pendulum" is a powerful song that speaks to the struggle for meaning and purpose in life in the face of adversity and pain. While the lyrics are melancholy and bleak, the final message is one of hope and the possibility of finding a way forward through devotion and perseverance.

Chris, this is another terrifically clear explanation of a topic that some people make needlessly complicated. Thank you so much for your excellent instructional videos, please keep them coming.

@yaalula

Super helpful and clear explanation! Thank you. 🙏🏻

@danelarson

I was wondering the same thing. I assume since there is not a direct risk of being detached entirely from the rock, this is the quickest and easiest way to avoid leaving gear. I would hope that most of the time you would find rap rings in places like this on popular routes??

@matthunter7779

Chris, I notice that you use the rope close to your tie in to start the loop and the rope "above" that as the slack end. Do you think it is a problem to use the grigri end  of the slack for the loop such that you are kind of suspended from your grigri?

@northaunt

Yes. in general you don't want to fall with rope/sling friction involved. But here, the forces are much smaller, You lower static weight of Your body and You use your legs which also offloads the sling.

@maxm10081

Is this bottlecreek crag? That's cool! I climb there sometimes

@PokerMakyo

What if your protection is for example friend? And you don't want to left behind it? Is there any trick which you can use to do it?

@EverettWilson

The leader owes you a cam.

@tomcerulwork

What makes the sling on rope friction acceptable here? My understanding was that rope should only ever slide against carabiners and never against rope or slings.

@johngo6283

Tom, good question. It's acceptable because you were going very slowly on the lower out and not generating enough heat to damage anything. Of course, you should NEVER top rope directly through webbing, because of the exact problem that you point out. And, if you're on a popular route, everyone else has had to lower out the exact same spot, and you're probably going to find a leaver biner or quick link at the lower out point.
