Um, I liked the effects? I thought they were fun? And I’m a novice at this stuff, I mix my own music for fun, and I heard very clear differences on all of them. Especially going from the 2A to the 3A.

Besides, if you’re actually working with artists, I’m that at some point you will have a vocal like this to work with. It’s the name of the game. Imagine getting upset demoing a plugin on distorted electric guitars…

CLA-76 Blue and CLA-2A is a perfect combination here....Thanks very much because this is gonna help me a lot not just in the studio but for live gigs that I do as well...I already use CLA-76 Blue followed by Rvox and a C6 on vocals for live sound...Love it.

Nice comparison video. I really liked the CLA-3A.
I understand that the autotune effect exaggerates the transients, but I was able to hear the attack character of the compressor clearly, which I found useful.

CLA-2A is my favorite among these for a female vox.
this one is very smooth, so it saves the natural dynamics of the voice, as per my personal perception.
if I have the raspy and various male voice in the mix (e. g. the rock/metal singing or an aggressive rap), I'd use the CLA-3A or CLA-76 blackey variation with 4.1 ratio and fast attack/release to accent the aggression, yet keeping it in place, so everything sounds "altogether".
you could also include the comparison of these compressors with a vocal group bus, as far, as this field is also perfect for them (I like the way CLA-2A smoothly "gathers" the instruments on the bus) and the test feels incomplete without it.
so is my humble opinion over these amazing tools.

The CLA-76 Bluey (or Kramer Pie) is always my favorite. I use them on Country vocals that get wild and it tames them quickly without adding unwanted distortion. Amazing plugins!

I liked the CLA-3A. Which is ironic because I had almost only been using the CLA-2A. I wasn't judging the singer and just listening. The 3A sounds like a still fat sound but close to a clean digital sound as well. Thanks. Btw, I'll be comparing these to UAD LA-2A tomorrow. Can't wait!!!

I fought through and suprisingly found the 76 (Bluey) to be the best, but I generally use the 76 (Blackey) followed by the 2A on my vocals

@Demarlo Woods no problem man, glad to share. Honestly I’m more likely to layer compression than automate before my vocal chain. Obviously this isn’t a rule, it’s just my tendency. The closest I get to automating pre-chain is adjusting the gain on some of the clips after comping and cleanup (like breath management, manual de-essing etc). Because I’m not riding faders, I tend to automate after my chain because it’s really just to accentuate moments for me

i felt that the word 'phase' fell short with the CLA-2A but actually got more pronounced wih the CLA-76 which I think may suit this particular genre better. All four sounded great though. Thanks for the back to back, this is the first time I could really pick out the differences between the models more easily

I like hearing the compressors in this context. The reality is that 99.9 of us in modern music production are going to be working with tracks that are tuned like this at some point, whether it was a creative decision or we were given a track with it baked in, it will happen. The example using the 1176 to quickly catch the peaks followed by the compression of the LA-2A was really cool and I'll definitely be trying it out.

edit: Ok, the vocal in the clip of the song at the end is just ridiculous...it sounds like someone is torturing a robot and it looks like she glitches at 8:03

There was no possible reason to destroy her voice with this terrible tuning. She could have been tuned perfectly and had it sound totally natural...and then throw on some extreme auto tuning for an effect here and there if you want, but damn!

I liked the comparison. I'm not sure why so many people are upset by the use of Autotune in these vocals. It's a stylistic preference that is extremely common in today's music. I can still tell the differences in the compressors perfectly fine in this video. Thanks for the video. I have all three compressors and have never tried the 3A on vocals so I'll give it a shot.

Here's what I've never understood with the so-called pro producers. They spend thousands of dollars on a classic mic only to cut out the bottom and mid-range frequencies on a vocal recording. The vocals end up sounding like the singer was recorded on a $30 mic with no preamp, at the bottom of a tunnel with auto-tune doing all the work. Blue Bottle Studio Condenser Microphone price starts at $3,999 if I'm not mistaken. I don't hear the remaining $3998. Just an observation. I'm out.

It's hard to tell what the compressors do when the voice is already autotuned so heavily, and it even sounds like there was some noise removal done too (idk if that was done or not, but it sounds like it)

So it seems huge thumbs up for auto-tune huh? :) The compression plugs seems pretty cool. I agree autotune was the first flag for me also - but I can get past that and see the features for what they are. But yeah, a true raw voice would have brought this into the realm of "real-world" for many of us. I know so many amazing "amateur" vocalists that sound great recorded into a smartphone. So it's def possible :)

in which decade are you guys living? autotune is the most popular and used standard voice modeling option by now. and the mid-range of her voice, which is slightly boosted by autotune, makes it easier to hear the differences. good job waves.

Agreed that the Auto tune was NOT cool for such a demo. We need a nice clean tone to compare. She's a great singer and I'm sure she was fine pitch wise...so probably some "producer" dude was like "yeah, let's be modern and use LOTS AND LOTS of...".
It's music, not pancakes (syrup overdose).

Anyway, having said all that, definitely an essential part of any mix engineer's toolbox .

For everybody watching waves is cool when you have your track being recorded through analog you’re not gonna get the sound unless you go out and buy a piece of analog gear then you can use waves compressors otherwise I think they’re just pointless

Some of you don’t understand auto tune, it doesn’t make bad singers good, you still have to be talented to sound good with auto tune, it does fix off key notes but it is extremely noticeable, and the farther off you are from the correct not the shittier the auto tune will sound. This video is fine with auto tune, in a studio setting you may be working with an artist who uses auto tune so it is perfectly reasonable to show the compression alongside autotune

Well damn, she must have been way off pitch then to begin with 😂 the tuning is creating a monotone sound. I can hear what the comps are doing, but after hearing her 500 times, it’s deafening. I get they are trying to demo a “current” pop sound, but damn dude, get someone with some range, so we can see those comps mash it up.

I love all the above compressor plugins BUT.... Terrible decision to use autotune on a product shootout!!! Shame on Waves for this. I couldn't listen here. It reinforces my opinion that while most waves products are great, the marketing is condescending. And I wish waves would stop name dropping artists and studios. Again, very condescending. A few of the plugins are truly gimmicks and they fall in line with their lowest common denominator marketing. This is waves not playschool.

Idk why everyone is complaining about how "the autotune is so bad", "she's such a bad singer, you should've gotten a better singer for this"....you guys do understand that they're likely using the autotune for that specific effect, right? People will get that more "robotic" sound to fit specific tracks - depending on the genre that they're making. From the sound of the little snippets here, it sounds like a pop or electronic song. You can still hear what the compression is doing with no issue even with the autotune. I personally think it sounds just fine - the vocals and the compressors.

Thanks for the excellent comparison! For the record, I didn't find any tuning that may have been on the vocal track to be distracting. I was listening to what the compressors were doing and I thought it was quite a clear comparison. My favorite is the combination of the black CLA-76 followed by th CLA-2A - and I may even follow one of those (or both!) with RVox.

Professional singers should NOT need "autotune". It should be used as an effect in specific genres ... NOT as an intonation aid. I suggest you start with vocal training before you use compression.

Every one of these compressor demo videos I've been watching uses some super over processed and absurdly auto-tuned vocal take. How are we supposed to know what the compressor can do? And is this really the sorry state of modern Pop music? Is everyone destroying the soul of every vocal performance and turning it into this thin, robotic nonsense removing any trace of the natural beauty of the human voice? Or has the music industry simply stopped hiring singers to sing?

It's not the use of auto tune that's distracting, it's the way it's used. A.T sounds great when the performance complements it. This just sounds like a out of key take with A.T working desperately to fix the signal. SMH I can't even appreciate the comparison.
