If You Could See Her
Cabaret Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know what you're thinking:
You wondered why I chose her
Out of all the ladies in the world.
That's just a first impression,
What good's a first impression?
If you knew her like I do
It would change you're point of view
If you could see her through my eyes
You wouldn't wonder at all
If you could see her through my eyes
I guarantee you would fall (like I did)
When we're in public togtheer
I hear society moan
But if they could see her through my eyes
Maybe they'd leave us alone

Spoken: (There you are my liebling. Your favourite!)

How can I speak of her virtues,
I don't know where to begin?
She's clever, she's smart, she reads musics
She doesn't smoke or drink gin (like I do)
Yet when we're walking together
They sneer if I'm holding her hand
But if they could see her through my eyes
Maybe they'd all understand

Why can't they leave us alone

Ladies and Gentleman
Is it a crime to fall in love?
Can we ever tell where the heart truly leads us?
All we are asking is eine bisschen Verstandnis
Why can't the world leben und leben lassen?
'Live and let live'

I understand your objection
I grant you the problem's not small

But if you could see her through my eyes
She wouldn't look Jewish at all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cabaret's song If You Could See Her are a complex and layered dissection of prejudice and societal norms. The song takes the viewpoint of an unnamed male protagonist who is in love with a woman that society would deem unfit for him to be with due to their prejudices. The lyrics begin with the singer acknowledging that people question why he has chosen this woman over any other. He then goes on to state that their first impression doesn't do her justice and that if they knew her like he did, it would change their minds. The chorus then solidifies this statement, with the singer claiming that if people could see her through his eyes, they would understand why he is in love with her.

The second verse continues to build on the previous sentiment, with the singer stating that he's unsure where to begin in his description of her virtues. He speaks of how clever, smart, and musically inclined she is, and how she doesn't drink or smoke, unlike him. He then goes on to mention how society sneers at them when they are together, but that if they could see her through his eyes, they would understand. The bridge of the song takes a more poignant turn, with the singer pleading with the audience to have some understanding for their situation. He asks why they can't 'live and let live' and implores the audience to consider the possibility that love knows no boundaries.

Spoken: Meine Damen und Herren, Mesdames et Messieurs
Ladies und Gentleman,
I ask you:
Is it a crime to fall in love?
Can one ever choose where the heart leads us?
All we ask is ein bisschen Verständnis (a little understanding)
Why can't the world leben und leben lassen?
'Live und let live....'

I understand your objection
I grant you the problem's not small
But if you could see her through my eyes
She wouldn't look Jewish at all.

@coferre

it’s so well done how you’ve completely forgotten the previous scene until that last line and then it crashes back

@parlisummers341

She wouldn’t. Look. Jewish. At all.
Honestly the way Alan says it is so chilling and serious then they go back to the quick dance before ending, I love how the emotions of this musical just take a dark turn and back to being funny or so! Love this and Alan Cumming is FANTASTIC as Emmece! 🙌✨🎭

@valmacclinchy

Alan was perfect in this role. Absolutely mesmerizing.
I'm lucky enough to have experienced this in person.

@mrolluque

I knew that was coming but man, I teared up with shock and anger.

@valmacclinchy

I remember being there, and the way he said that line at the end made me feel physically ill.
Alan Cumming is perfect in this role. He completely reinveted the Emcee, and I'm honored to have experienced the show in 1999.
