Lead is Earl Carroll. Met him a few times. Nicest guy in the world. Darn shame, the record companies cleaned and are still collecting, but Earl passed a few years back, in his 70's. Had nothing, and had to continue working as a janitor at a Harlem H.S. until the day he died.

Originally the "CADILLACS" came together as a group in early 1953, as the "CARNATIONS." Hailing from Harlem, NYC, (with the help of manager Esther Navarro) Earl Carroll along with J.R. Bailey and the Cadillacs (vocal group Hall of Fame 2004) went on to record some true "Classic Do-Wopp" records in the 1950s, on the JOSIE record label. Their classic song (done by so many groups over the years) "Gloria" and "Wonder Why" were recorded in 1954. I personally love "Zoom" and "The Girl I Love." In 1955, their most notorious record "Speedo" was released, bringing a large white teenage audience to black rock and roll do-wopp music. In 1959, the Cadillacs were featured in the movie "Go Johnny Go." Despite many line-up changes over the years, the Cadillacs have always been considered a premiere true original do-wopp group, from 1950s NYC. They have always entertained us and were truly loved and embraced in the NY Metro area. Their songs were constantly played on the old "WCBSFM 101.1 FM NYC" radio station. (this was NYC's oldie's station of the past) Earl Carroll was a gentlemen and will be missed by many. He is a true part of 1950s America and will never be forgotten. RIP Earl and J.R. I thank you and the Cadillacs for all the great music and memories you have given us over the years....rock on....

+Charmagne Garcia I'm 39 going on 80 but I consider myself very young at heart. With my generation I am quite selective on what I like. With the exception of rap and/or hippo-hopping (I hardly consider that music at all) there are some really excellent music from most genres of todays past, however it is nothing like it used to be.

I DO NOT like the monotonous bump and grind or obnoxious twerking of today's music. That's not at all pleasurable, to me it is just a bunch of mindless drones being manipulated by a mindless random beat. I consider it very cult-ish.

But the doo-wop of yesteryear (such as this) has such a unique exquisite elegance all it's own that is also quite timeless and majestic. Indeed an extremely fine treasure to be truly enjoyed for always and forever.

The one comparison I keep making is this about our generation (The Silent Generation): We, who were White, listened to mostly Black Men sing. We were the 1st kids to do this. Came the 60's, and we were young adults, and we saw for the 1st time, the inequities of the Black People. Many of us joined in the protests, and tried to help our idols and their families get equal rights. Many of us also protested and marched against Viet Nam. All in all, I think our's was truly a really great generation.

I know I was one of them - we always wanting to like the "cool" kids but few of us could join the group. There were lots of places to dance, malt shops. drive in movies with steamed windows and so many after the games parties.

James, if you think Gloria is the best song in the history of rock and roll (and I'm not arguing that face), then I think I have a real treat for you. Google the 26-minute documentary by Thomas Porett called "Harmonizing: Singing from the Heart". Watch the whole thing, please, because it's awesome. But pay particular attention at the 11:40 mark when Joe Porpora (singing lead for the Emeralds) does Gloria. It's truncated but I'm betting you'll agree it's the best version of this song you've ever heard. I can't find it anywhere else but I'd sure pay a lot of money for a copy of the full song! Let me know what you think!

Unfortunately many who enjoyed this music as young people are gone now, but the genre will live on. Good music is enjoyed by many from each and every generation. Now that I have retired I plan to feature DooWop at many events I DJ because people want to hear it! IMO there is no music like it!

Hard to believe that is one of my top ten doo wop songs by the same group who sang Speedo!? Really a return to the projects of C.C. Ca. Cal/mex. dances. By the date this was new to my mind as an 8 yr. old, white kid in C.C. Only for the romantically minded soul inspired. If you don't have it, you won't feel it.
