Phoenix
Cady Groves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh
Phoenix was a bust
Everything I left my life for
Just blew up
The door just literally closed
On you, on me
And the person that you chose to be
You left me wide eyed
Waiting all summer
For you to come back
From california and
Make the move to
Seal the deal on you and me
We made it one month till you started pushing
On the part of your life
You really know you shouldn't it
Was clear you regretted coming here with me
You left me closed eyed so I wouldn't see
And soon after I was swallowed by the city and
Spit out
Spit out

I had invested all of my trust
It was never if,
It was when you were gonna leave
This heart just wants to go back
To you, to me
To us, before we went to AZ.

You left me wide eyed
Waiting all summer
For you to come back
From california and
Make the move to
Seal the deal on you and me
We made it one month till you started pushing
On the part of your life
You really know you shouldn't it
Was clear you regretted coming here with me
You left me closed eyed so I wouldn't see
And soon after I was swallowed by the city and

Spit out
Spit out

Overall Meaning

Cady Groves's "Phoenix" is a song about heartbreak, disappointment, and regret. It tells the story of a woman who moved to Phoenix with her partner in the hopes of building a life together, only to be left behind when that partner suddenly realized that they had made a mistake. The title of the song refers to Phoenix, Arizona, the city where the singer's relationship fell apart.

In the first verse, the singer describes how everything she had left her life for "just blew up" when her partner chose to leave her. The door literally closed on both of them, and the singer is left to reflect on the person that her partner chose to be. She had waited all summer for her partner to come back from California and make the final move to be with her, but it all fell apart when her partner started pushing on a part of their life that they knew they shouldn't have. The singer realizes that her partner regretted coming to Phoenix with her, and that she was left behind to be swallowed up by the city, spit out and left to deal with the aftermath of their failed relationship.

The chorus of the song is where the singer expresses her desire to go back to the time when things were good between them. She had invested all of her trust into this person, and it was always a matter of when, not if, they were going to leave. All the singer wants is to go back to the way things were, before they moved to Arizona and everything fell apart.
