Table For Two
Caedmon's Call Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Spent anther late night over pancakes
Talkin' 'bout soccer
And how every man's just the same.
We made speculation
On the who's and the when's of our futures
And how everyone's lonely
But still we just couldn't complain.
And how we just hate being alone.
Could I have missed my only chance,
And now I'm just wasting my time
By lookin' around
But ya know I know better,
I'm not gonna worry 'bout nothin'.
Cause if the birds and the flowers survive,
Then I'll make it okay.
I'm given a chance and a rock;
see which one breaks a window.
See which one keeps me up all night and into the day.
Because I'm so scared of being alone
That I forget what house i live in.
But it's not my job to wait by the phone
For her to call.
Well this day's been crazy
But everything's happened on schedule,
from the rain and the cold
To the drink that I spilled on my shirt.
'Cause You knew how You'd save me
before I fell dead in the garden,
And You knew this day
long before You made me out of dirt.
And You know the plans that You have for me
And You can't plan the end and not plan the means
And so I suppose I just need some peace,
Just to get me to sleep
The song “Table for Two” by Caedmon’s Call tells a story of two friends, Danny and the singer, having a late night conversation over pancakes. The conversation is about their speculation on the future and how every man is just the same. They talk about how everyone is lonely, but they still cannot complain. The songwriter expresses his fear of being alone and missing out on his only chance. However, he realizes that he should not worry as everything happens on schedule, and he should accept the plans that God has for him.
The chorus suggests that the songwriter is afraid of being alone and that he sometimes forgets the house he lives in. He also mentions that he does not want to wait by the phone for someone to call. The second verse acknowledges that the day has been quite crazy, but everything has happened according to a plan. The songwriter believes that God already knew how to save him from the troubles that he faces in the world. The song concludes with the singer acknowledging that he needs some peace to get him to sleep.
The song’s lyrics are relatable and express the doubt and fear that we often face in our lives. However, the songwriter encourages the listener to have peace and trust in God’s plan. The lyrics also express the importance of having someone to talk to and the craving for human connections despite the fear of being alone.

I remember falling in love with this song back in the early 2000s. I was feeling very lonely and down about finding love. I keep coming back to this song from time to time, even though I met my husband about two years after I heard this song. It will forever be in my heart.
