Veloso is the fifth of the seven children born to José Telles Veloso ("Seu Zezinho") and Claudionor Vianna Telles Veloso ("Dona Canô"). His younger sister Maria Bethânia, another popular and renowned artist in Brazil, preceded him to fame as a singer in the mid-1960s. He began his career around 1965 singing bossa nova and he has cited his greatest musical influences from his early period as João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi. (João Gilberto would say later about Caetano's contribution that it added an intellectual dimension to brazilian popular music.) But with such musical collaborators Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Chico Buarque, and Os Mutantes, and greatly influenced by the later work of The Beatles, developed tropicalismo, which fused Brazilian pop with rock and roll and avant garde art music resulting in a more international, psychedelic, and socially aware sound. Veloso's politically active stance, unapologetically leftist, earned him the enmity of Brazil's military dictatorship which ruled until 1985; his songs were frequently censored, and some were banned. Veloso was also alienated from the socialist left in Brazil becasue of his acceptance and integration of non-nationalist influences (like rock and roll) in his music. Veloso and Gilberto Gil spent several months in jail for "anti-government activity" in 1968 and eventually exiled themselves to London. Caetano Veloso's work upon his return in 1972 was often characterized by frequent appropriations not only of international styles, but of half-forgotten Brazilian folkloric styles and rhythms as well. In particular, his celebration of the Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia can be seen as the precursor of such Afro-centric groups as Timbalada.
In the 1980s, Veloso's popularity outside Brazil grew, especially in Israel, Portugal, France and Africa. By 2004, he was one of the most respected and prolific international pop stars, with more than fifty recordings available, including songs in soundtracks of movies such as Pedro Almodovar's Hable con Ella (Talk to Her), and Frida. In 2002 Veloso published an account of his early years and the Tropicalia movement, Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.
His first all-English CD was A Foreign Sound (2004), which covers Nirvana's "Come as You Are" and compositions from the Great American Songbook. Five of the six songs on his third eponymous album, released in 1971, were also in English.
Manhattan

The Bronx and Staten Island too
It's lovely going through the zoo
It's very fancy
On old Delancey Street, you know
The subway charms us so
When balmy breezes blow to and fro
And tell me what street
Compares with Mott Street in July?
Sweet pushcarts gently gliding by
The great big city's a wondrous toy
Just made for a girl and boy
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy
We'll go to the Greenwich
Where modern man itch to be free
And Bowling Green you'll see with me
We'll bathe at Brighton
The fish you'll frighten when you're in
Your bathing suit so thin
Will make the shellfish grin, fin to fin
And South Pacific
Is a terrific show they say
We both may see it close some day
The city's clamor can never spoil
The dreams of a boy and goil
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy
We'll have Manhattan
The Bronx and Staten Island too
We'll try to cross Fifth Avenue
As black as onyx
We'll find the Bronnix Park Express
Our Flatbush flat, I guess
Will be a great success, more or less
A short vacation
On Inspiration Point we'll spend
And in the station house we'll end
But Civic Virtue cannot destroy
The dreams of a [Incomprehensible]
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy
The song "Manhattan" by Caetano Veloso is a tribute to the city of New York, and in this song, he sings about the various parts of New York City that he loves. The song is full of vivid imagery, and it's easy to picture yourself walking through the streets of New York as you listen to the song. The song starts by expressing Veloso's desire to explore Manhattan along with Bronx and Staten Island. He sings about the zoo, the subway, and how, on balmy days, the subway charms you with its breeze.
The song continues with Veloso singing about the beauty of the streets of New York, such as old Delancey Street, Mott Street, and Bowling Green. He describes how he wants to visit Greenwich to be free and how he and the special person that he is singing to will take a dip in Brighton Beach. He also mentions the great show of South Pacific and how they both may get to see it close some day.
The song ends with Veloso promising that the city's clamor will never spoil their dreams. They will turn Manhattan into an isle of joy, and they will explore the city's various parts and make memories together.

Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan...
Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan...
Um remoinho de dinheiro
Varre o mundo inteiro num leve leviatã
E aqui dançam guerras no meio
Da paz das moradas de amor
Ah! Pra onde vai, quando for
Essa imensa alegria, toda essa exaltação
Ah! Solidão, multidão
Que menina bonita mordendo a polpa da maçã...

Here is a Google translation ...
A canoe canoe
Bending the morning from north to south
Goddess of legend in the bow
Raise a torch in your hand
All the men in the world
They turned their eyes in that direction.
Feels the taste of the wind
Singing in the glasses sweet name da cunha:
Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan, Manhattan
A whirlwind of money
Sweep the whole world, a slight leviathan
And here wars dance in the middle
Peace of the abodes of love
Ah! Where are you going?
This immense joy, all this exaltation
Ah! Loneliness, crowd
What a beautiful girl biting the apple pulp:
Manhattan, Manhattan
Manhattan, Manhattan
Although Caetano is considered to be a great lyricist ... along with Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, and many others ... I've often found that a bit of the beauty and mystery of the music is lost with the banality of literal translations or words at all. That is not the case in this song .... beautiful lyrics which no translation software can come near.

Such is the power of art: that a Brazilian could compose a composition that so completely captures the scope and spirit of the four century history of Manhattan, in his native South American motifs and idioms. Gracias Maestro Veloso!
