Veloso is the fifth of the seven children born to José Telles Veloso ("Seu Zezinho") and Claudionor Vianna Telles Veloso ("Dona Canô"). His younger sister Maria Bethânia, another popular and renowned artist in Brazil, preceded him to fame as a singer in the mid-1960s. He began his career around 1965 singing bossa nova and he has cited his greatest musical influences from his early period as João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi. (João Gilberto would say later about Caetano's contribution that it added an intellectual dimension to brazilian popular music.) But with such musical collaborators Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Chico Buarque, and Os Mutantes, and greatly influenced by the later work of The Beatles, developed tropicalismo, which fused Brazilian pop with rock and roll and avant garde art music resulting in a more international, psychedelic, and socially aware sound. Veloso's politically active stance, unapologetically leftist, earned him the enmity of Brazil's military dictatorship which ruled until 1985; his songs were frequently censored, and some were banned. Veloso was also alienated from the socialist left in Brazil becasue of his acceptance and integration of non-nationalist influences (like rock and roll) in his music. Veloso and Gilberto Gil spent several months in jail for "anti-government activity" in 1968 and eventually exiled themselves to London. Caetano Veloso's work upon his return in 1972 was often characterized by frequent appropriations not only of international styles, but of half-forgotten Brazilian folkloric styles and rhythms as well. In particular, his celebration of the Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia can be seen as the precursor of such Afro-centric groups as Timbalada.
In the 1980s, Veloso's popularity outside Brazil grew, especially in Israel, Portugal, France and Africa. By 2004, he was one of the most respected and prolific international pop stars, with more than fifty recordings available, including songs in soundtracks of movies such as Pedro Almodovar's Hable con Ella (Talk to Her), and Frida. In 2002 Veloso published an account of his early years and the Tropicalia movement, Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.
His first all-English CD was A Foreign Sound (2004), which covers Nirvana's "Come as You Are" and compositions from the Great American Songbook. Five of the six songs on his third eponymous album, released in 1971, were also in English.

Ame-o e deixe-o livre para amar
Livre para amar
Livre para amar
O seu amor
Ame-o e deixe-o ir aonde quiser
Ir aonde quiser
O seu amor
Ame-o e deixe-o brincar
Ame-o e deixe-o correr
Ame-o e deixe-o cansar
Ame-o e deixe-o dormir em paz
O seu amor
Ame-o e deixe-o ser o que ele é
Ser o que ele é
Ser o que ele é
O seu amor
Ame-o e deixe-o livre para amar
Livre para amar
Livre para amar
O seu amor
Ame-o e deixe-o ir aonde quiser
Ir aonde quiser
Ir aonde quiser
O seu amor
Ame-o e deixe-o brincar
Ame-o e deixe-o correr
Ame-o e deixe-o cansar
Ame-o e deixe-o dormir em paz

The lyrics of "O Meu Amor" describe the unique and gentle way in which the singer’s love approaches and kisses her. The love she feels is overwhelming, and every time he kisses her, her skin becomes covered in goosebumps. His gentle approach to love-making almost seems to reach her soul. The lyrics continue to describe how her lover’s intimate secrets and playful demeanor excite and enthrall her. He knows how to leave her breathless with just a touch, teasing and tickling her, before fully exploring and enjoying her body.
Throughout the song, the singer expresses that she belongs to her lover, and he belongs to her - they are each other’s. She describes how his touch overwhelms her and sets her on fire, leaving her feeling like she has no control. Their love is described as being wild and unstoppable, leaving her completely addicted to him.
Overall, "O Meu Amor" is a poetic and sensual ode to the love that the singer feels for her partner. The slow, seductive pace of the song combined with the passionate lyrics does a great job of conveying the pure, inexplicable love shared between two people.

O meu amor tem um jeito manso que é só seu
My love has a gentle way that's only his
E que me deixa louca quando me beija a boca
And drives me crazy when he kisses me
A minha pele toda fica arrepiada
My whole skin gets goosebumps
E me beija com calma e fundo
And kisses me slowly and deeply
Até minh'alma se sentir beijada
Until my soul feels kissed
Que rouba os meus sentidos, viola os meus ouvidos
Who steals my senses, rapes my ears
Com tantos segredos lindos e indecentes
With so many beautiful and indecent secrets
Depois brinca comigo, ri do meu umbigo
Then he plays with me, laughs at my belly button
E me crava os dentes
And bites me
Eu sou sua menina, viu? E ele é o meu rapaz
I'm his girl, you know? And he's my boy
Meu corpo é testemunha do bem que ele me faz
My body bears witness to the good he does me
Que me deixa maluca, quando me roça a nuca
Who drives me crazy when he brushes my neck
E quase me machuca com a barba mal feita
And almost hurts me with his unshaven face
E de pousar as coxas entre as minhas coxas
And placing his thighs between mine
Quando ele se deita
When he lies down
De me fazer rodeios, de me beijar os seios
Of making circles, of kissing my breasts
Me beijar o ventre e me deixar em brasa
Of kissing my belly and leaving me on fire
Desfruta do meu corpo como se o meu corpo
He enjoys my body as if my body
Fosse a sua casa
Were his home
