Veloso is the fifth of the seven children born to José Telles Veloso ("Seu Zezinho") and Claudionor Vianna Telles Veloso ("Dona Canô"). His younger sister Maria Bethânia, another popular and renowned artist in Brazil, preceded him to fame as a singer in the mid-1960s. He began his career around 1965 singing bossa nova and he has cited his greatest musical influences from his early period as João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi. (João Gilberto would say later about Caetano's contribution that it added an intellectual dimension to brazilian popular music.) But with such musical collaborators Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Chico Buarque, and Os Mutantes, and greatly influenced by the later work of The Beatles, developed tropicalismo, which fused Brazilian pop with rock and roll and avant garde art music resulting in a more international, psychedelic, and socially aware sound. Veloso's politically active stance, unapologetically leftist, earned him the enmity of Brazil's military dictatorship which ruled until 1985; his songs were frequently censored, and some were banned. Veloso was also alienated from the socialist left in Brazil becasue of his acceptance and integration of non-nationalist influences (like rock and roll) in his music. Veloso and Gilberto Gil spent several months in jail for "anti-government activity" in 1968 and eventually exiled themselves to London. Caetano Veloso's work upon his return in 1972 was often characterized by frequent appropriations not only of international styles, but of half-forgotten Brazilian folkloric styles and rhythms as well. In particular, his celebration of the Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia can be seen as the precursor of such Afro-centric groups as Timbalada.
In the 1980s, Veloso's popularity outside Brazil grew, especially in Israel, Portugal, France and Africa. By 2004, he was one of the most respected and prolific international pop stars, with more than fifty recordings available, including songs in soundtracks of movies such as Pedro Almodovar's Hable con Ella (Talk to Her), and Frida. In 2002 Veloso published an account of his early years and the Tropicalia movement, Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.
His first all-English CD was A Foreign Sound (2004), which covers Nirvana's "Come as You Are" and compositions from the Great American Songbook. Five of the six songs on his third eponymous album, released in 1971, were also in English.
O Namorado
Caetano Veloso Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sabe qual é o som
Nada do Leme ao Leblon
Usa um esmalte marrom
Batom do mesmo tom
Ela é m´mais que demais
Sempre colado ao lado
O par mais apaixonado
Mas
O namorado
Tem namorado
O namorado
Tem namorado
(Que importa o que se diz
Se a tarde cai num tom feliz
E a brisa bate leve e não tem medo
Se a onda quebra em pérolas e verdes tão sutis
E a luz do sol no céu não tem segredo)
O namorado
Tem namorado
O namorado
Tem namorado
The lyrics of "O Namorado" by Caetano Veloso describe a woman who is "everything that is good" and knows what sound she wants to hear. She is elegant and put together with brown nail polish and matching lipstick. She is more than amazing and has control over her relationship with her spots cat. She is a passionate lover with the most passionate partner. However, the title of the song itself reveals the twist in the story. The lyrics repeat the phrase "O namorado tem namorado," which means "the boyfriend has a boyfriend." It is revealed that the girl's partner is in fact in a same-sex relationship. The song represents a society that is still not ready to accept the idea of same-sex relationships. The singer speaks of the importance of disregarding societal norms and embracing love, which is all that matters.

Minha interpretação sobre essa música:
O sol, manhã de flor e sal
E areia no batom
(fala sobre um dia na praia, dias na praia são sempre alegres)
Farol, saudades no varal
E o sol queimando o meu jornal
Minha voz, minha luz, meu som
(atributos a mãe)
Todo homem precisa de uma mãe
Todo homem precisa de uma mãe
O céu, espuma de maçã
Barriga, dois irmãos
(em sua barriga já tiveram duas crianças)
O meu cabelo negra lã
Nariz, e rosto, e mãos
(características marcantes da mãe)
O mel, a prata, o ouro e a rã

EVERY MAN
(Zeca Veloso)
The sun
Morning flower and salt
And sand in lipstick
Lighthouse
I miss you on the clothesline
Red, blue, brown
I am
Umbilical cord
It's never good for me
And the sun
Burning my newspaper
My voice, my light, my sound
Every man needs a mother
Every man needs a mother
The sky
Apple foam
Belly, two brothers
My
Hair, black wool
Nose and face and hands
The honey
Silver, gold and frog
Head and heart
And the sky
Opens in the morning
Shelter, lap, floor
Every man needs a mother
Every man needs a mother

This is a kind of Brazilian poem-making where sentences are largely cut up and you can only vaguely infer what one is talking about. In this case, imagery that references family, ties, the warm light of morning, love.
