Beleza Pura
Caetano Veloso & Maria Gadú Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Não me amarra dinheiro não
Mas formosura
Dinheiro não
A pele escura
Dinheiro não
A carne dura
Dinheiro não
Moça preta do Curuzu
Beleza pura
Federação
Beleza pura
Boca do Rio
Beleza pura

A transa do cabelo
Conchas do mar
Ela manda buscar pra botar no cabelo
Toda minúcia
Toda delícia

Não me amarra dinheiro não
Mas elegí¢ncia
Não me amarra dinheiro não
Mas a cultura
Dinheiro não
A pele escura
Dinheiro não

A carne dura
Dinheiro não
Moço lindo do Badauê
Beleza pura
Do Ilê Aiyê
Beleza pura
Dinheiro yeah
Beleza pura
Dinheiro não

Dentro daquele turbante dos Filhos de Gandhi
É o que há
Tudo é chique demais
Tudo é muito elegante
Manda botar

Overall Meaning

In "Beleza Pura," Caetano Veloso and Maria Gadú sing about the beauty of black people from various neighborhoods in Salvador, Brazil, and how their natural beauty and grace are not dependent on material wealth. The lyrics emphasize the idea that true beauty is inherent and cannot be bought with money. The song celebrates cultural and physical diversity and speaks to the deep-rooted appreciation and admiration that many Brazilians have for African culture and aesthetics.

Throughout the song, the artists mention different neighborhoods in Salvador, such as Curuzu, Federação, and Boca do Rio. These places are known to be predominantly black and have a strong cultural significance in Salvador. The mention of Ilê Aiyê, a prominent Afro-Brazilian cultural group, and the Filhos de Gandhi, a traditional Carnival group, also highlights the importance of African-derived cultural practices in Brazilian society.

The verses about the woman from Curuzu emphasize her beauty rituals and the meticulous care she takes in styling her hair. Through the use of natural materials such as shells from the sea, the lyrics show how she creates a unique and beautiful look that is distinctive to her culture and heritage. The song celebrates the value of cultural traditions, the importance of self-care, and the beauty that can be found in those who remain true to their roots.

Pense nisso.
