The War Is Over
Cage the Elephant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a young man, I never needed anyone
Bruised and broken, shattered, always on the run
Safe behind a half-smile, layin' in the shadows
I became a rich man, I held the world up with my hands
Inside I was a poor man, still screaming, "I don't understand"
"Why am I always running?" "Why am I always hiding?"
"What's the point in living when living feels like dying?"
You can build your walls, love will tear it down
You can hide your heart inside a man-made house
You can build your walls, build 'em to the sky
One day you will find love was on both sides
The war is over

I came upon a wise man, he said, "Sit beside me son"
"When I was a young man, I was like you, the prodigal son"
Safe behind a half-smile, hidin' in the shadows
Tell 'em that it's all right, tell 'em 'cause you said so

You can build your walls, love will tear it down
You can hide a heart inside a man-made house
You can build your walls, build 'em to the sky
One day you will find love was on both sides

The war is over, love's already won
The war is over, the war is over
The war is over, love's already won
The war is over, the war is over

Time stands still so long
I feel so low
I know what follows, what follows

You can build your walls, but love will tear it down
You can hide a heart inside a man-made house
You can build your walls, build 'em to the sky
One day you will find love was on both sides

The war is over, love's already won
The war is over, the war is over

The war is over, love's already won
The war is over, the war is over

Overall Meaning

The song "The War is Over" by Cage the Elephant is about the feelings of hopelessness and loneliness that create walls around people. It talks about the process of breaking those walls down and finding love, which ends the war that the singer is fighting within themselves. The lyrics begin with reminiscing about a time when the singer, as a young man, believed that he never needed anyone. However, he was always bruised, broken, and running away from something. He put on a half-smile and hid in the shadows, trying to forget his troubles. Despite becoming a rich man who seemed to have everything, he was still struggling with his inner demons, always wondering why he felt like dying instead of living. This part of the song represents the wall that the singer has built around himself to block out the world.

The next part of the song is about how the singer meets a wise man who tells him that he was just like him when he was young. The wise man encourages the singer to tell others that it's okay to feel lost, but everything will work out in the end. He reminds the singer that love is stronger than walls built out of fear, and that it's okay to break down those walls and let love in. This part of the song represents the singer's transformation as he realizes that he doesn't need to be alone and that love can overcome anything.

The chorus of the song repeats the idea that love will conquer everything, even the walls the singer has built around himself. The line, "The war is over, love's already won", is a reminder that once the singer learns to love himself and others, his battle with loneliness and despair will come to an end. It's a message of hope and encouragement to those who are struggling with inner demons similar to what the singer was facing in the beginning of the song.

The War is Over-

When I was a young man
I never needed anyone
Bruised and broken
Shattered
Always on the run
Safe behind a half smile
Laying in the shadows

I became a rich man
I held the world up with my hands
Inside I was a poor man
Still screaming
I don't understand

Why am I always running
Why am I always hiding
What's the point of living
When living feels like dying

You can build your walls
Love will tear it down
You can't hide a heart
Inside a man-made house
You can build your walls
Build then to the sky
One day you will find
Love was on both sides

The war is over

I came upon a wise man
He said sit beside me, son
When I was a young man
I was like you
The Prodigal Son
Safe behind a half sime
Hiding in the shadows
Tell them that it's all right
Tell them 'cause you said so

You can build your walls
Love will tear it down
You can't hide a heart
Inside a man-made house
You can build your walls
Build them to the sky
One day you will find
Love was on both sides

The war is over
Love's already won
The war is over
The war is over
The war is over
Love's already won
The war is over
The war is over

Time stands still
So long
I feel so low
I know what follows
What follows

You can build your walls
Love will tear it down
You can't hide a heart
Inside a man-made house
You can build your walls
Build them to the sky
One day you will find
Love was on both sides

The war is over
Love's already won
The war is over
The war is over
The war is over
Love's already won
The war is over
The war is over

@Carlos I know man, I love it so much, one of my favorite albums ever. I can't lock in on a favorite at all. I think it is a tie between, "Social Cues," "Skin and Bones," and "The War is Over." I do love the energy of "Night Running especially Matt Schultz coming in on the second verse.
