According to the band’s webseries for the album’s creative process and creation, frontman Matt Shultz revealed that the song is about the romance between the historic criminal partners Bonnie and Clyde, from the perspective of the former. Shultz imagined her as a pyromaniac that was “in love with the wrong guy.”
Pyromania is an impulse control disorder in which individuals repeatedly fail to resist impulses to deliberately start fires. In the song, they uses fire as a metaphor for Bonnie’s impulsive love for Clyde’s dangerous nature.
Too Late To Say Goodbye
Cage the Elephant Lyrics

From the moment I first saw you I was yours and you were mine
Deep down we both knew you were trouble by design
And the echo of my mother's words, "Baby, don't you play with fire"
I was always playing the part, first love only set by a spark
There was no way changing my mind
Now I'm under your spell, trapped in a lie
No turning back, no where to run, no where to hide
It's too late to say goodbye
Push back from my heart, wish we could go back to the start
But oh my god is this real no more time
It's too late, it's too late to say goodbye
I can hear the sounds of sirens circling around
Forced to watch the ashes floating, softly drifting to the ground
Deep down we both knew it was trouble by design
And the echo of my mother's words, "Baby, don't you play with fire"
I was always playing the part, first love only set by a spark
There was no way changing my mind
Now I'm under your spell, trapped in a lie
Shouldn't have stood that close to the fire
No turning back, no where to run, no where to hide
It's too late to say goodbye
Push back from my heart, wish we could go back to the start
But oh my god is this real, no more time
It's too late, it's too late to say goodbye
After all the dust has settled, we can settle down
Just the two of us forever, no one else around
No one else around around, around
Now I'm under your spell, trapped in a lie
Shouldn't have stood that close to the fire
No turning back, no where to run, no where to hide
It's too late to say goodbye
Push back from my heart, wish we could go back to the start
But oh my god no escape, no more time
It's too late, it's too late to say goodbye
In Cage the Elephant's song "Too Late to Say Goodbye," the singer describes being trapped in a destructive relationship. The first verse establishes a sense of infatuation and danger, as the singer describes the object of their affection as a "precious ember burning" and acknowledges that they knew from the start that the relationship was "trouble by design." The second verse alludes to a kind of catastrophe, with "the sounds of sirens circling around" and "the ashes floating, softly drifting to the ground." Yet despite these ominous hints, the singer seems unable to extricate themselves from the situation, feeling "trapped in a lie" and recognizing that "it's too late to say goodbye."
The chorus reinforces this sense of entrapment and loss, as the singer laments that there is "no turning back, no where to run, no where to hide." The bridge provides a moment of introspection and regret, with the singer wishing they could "go back to the start." However, the repeated refrain of "it's too late" suggests that the damage has been done and there is no path to redemption.

Seems like borderlands is what really gave them that leap they needed. So many old fans got it from borderlands.
