How Long
Calling All Cars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good bye again my worn out face
Another night of bitter taste
No need for reason
Your time has passed
You've come and come
An empty glass, a rusted knife

How long has this gone
How long can you use someone
How long has this gone
How long can you use someone
How long

Is there another place to go
So far away from what we know
No need for reason
Your time has passed and come undone
An empty glass for us tonight

How long has this gone
How long can you use someone
How long has this gone
How long can you use someone
How long

I'd never be a part of this
If I had seen what was coming
Could never take another second
I hate to taste

How long has this gone
How long can you use someone
How long has this gone
How long can you use someone

How long
How long, yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "How Long" by Calling All Cars explore the theme of being used and abused in a relationship. The first verse talks about a worn-out face and a bitter taste, which suggests exhaustion and dissatisfaction with the current situation. The lines "no need for reason, your time has passed, you've come and come, an empty glass, a rusted knife" describe the feeling of being stuck in a cycle of meaningless actions and emotions. The singer questions how long this has gone on and how long one can use someone before it becomes too much to bear. The second verse raises the possibility of leaving the familiar behind and finding another place to go, but the same feeling of being used persists.

The chorus, which is repeated four times throughout the song, emphasizes the sense of being trapped and used. The repetition of "how long has this gone" and "how long can you use someone" emphasizes the importance of these questions in the singer's mind. The lyrics suggest that the singer has had enough and cannot take another second of being used, but the sense of being trapped raises the possibility that the situation may continue indefinitely. The final "how long" emphasizes the frustration and sense of powerlessness that the singer feels.

Overall, the lyrics of "How Long" are a powerful exploration of the experience of being used and trapped in a relationship. The repetition of key phrases emphasizes the importance of these questions and the sense of frustration and powerlessness that accompanies them. The imagery of the worn-out face, bitter taste, empty glass, and rusted knife create a vivid sense of exhaustion and dissatisfaction. The song is a powerful exploration of the struggles and complexities of modern relationships.

I have a feeling im a good bit older than you, but I just wanted to say... YES. I also did not have an emotional troubling childhood, and the only problems I dealth with during my teen years, I caused myself. Mostly because of a girl.

But, fucking Senses Fail man, jesus fuck. Now, I do want to put it out there, I dont like their newest stuff. Well.. Not that I dont like it, but it doesnt do it for me like their earlier stuff does.

For me, the best senses fail albums are
1-From the Depths of Dreams
2-Let it Enfold you
3-Still Searching

Honestly, they';re all #1 for me, but From the Depths of Dreams, the original EP, is just so fucking epic on its own.. The song that got me into Senses Fail, is Free Falling with a Parachute. I remember where I was and who I was with when I heard it.. and I THINK it was the end of the summer, 2002, just before I was about to start highschool.

Since you like Senses Fail.. You like TBS? Brand New? Thursday? Much as I love Senses fail, I like Taking Back Sunday even more. Favorite band right there.

(and yes, I fully aware of the fact that Im 30 and the music I listen to is all old post-hardcore/Emo-Rock from the early 00s.. but whatever.
