Heaven
Calum Scott Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to count the stars in the sky
Now I count the ones in your eyes
I used to think that my paradise
Was somewhere waiting on the other side
But you take me higher than I've been
Laying hands on my skin
It's true, nothing compares to you
So tell me why
What good is life
If we're all just waiting to dance in the sky?
I'm already there, here in your eyes
We climb the gates every time that you lie down next to me
I rest in peace
They say it's better, but how could that be?
If everyone had a love like us
They wouldn't call that place above heaven

Waking up to you feels like a pinch myself moment
If we're only here for a while
I wanna spend all of it holding you
Take me higher than I've been
Got me questioning everything I knew, ooh
'Cause nothing compares to you

So tell me why
What good is life
If we're all just waiting to dance in the sky?
I'm already there, here in your eyes
We climb the gates every time that you lie down next to me
I rest in peace
They say it's better, but how could that be?
If everyone had a love like us
They wouldn't call that place above heaven

Nothing comes, nothing comes close to this
Looking up, looking up even if it exists
My heaven is on your lips

So tell me why
What good is life
If we're all just waiting to dance in the sky?
I'm already there, here in your eyes
We climb the gates every time that you lie down next to me
I rest in peace
They say it's better, but how could that be?

If everyone had a love like us
They wouldn't call that place above heaven

Overall Meaning

In Calum Scott’s song “Heaven,” he expresses the depth of his love for his partner and how their love has changed his perspective on life. The opening lines of the song, “I used to count the stars in the sky, now I count the ones in your eyes,” reveals the shift in his focus from materialistic things to the love he shares with his partner. Calum describes how he used to believe that paradise was something waiting on the other side, but his partner has taken him higher than he’s ever been before. He goes on to reveal that being with his partner makes him question everything he ever knew, because nothing compares to their love for each other.

The chorus of the song poses a rhetorical question, “what good is life, if we’re all just waiting to dance in the sky?” It’s a thought-provoking question that reminds the listener of the fleeting nature of life and how love can make even the briefest of moments feel like heaven. Throughout the song, Calum emphasizes the idea that their love is so special that it’s equivalent to paradise, and he even goes as far as to say that if everyone had a love like theirs, they wouldn't call that place above heaven.

Overall, Calum’s “Heaven” is a beautiful ode to the transformative power of love. The song is filled with strong emotions and heartfelt lyrics that capture the essence of being deeply in love.

Always cry hearing this song. Immediately have my own little music video playing in my head of the years I’ve spent with my partner.

We’re coming up on nine years together, engaged for one. Met as teens, we were each other’s first relationship, first kiss and everything. We were long distance on top of it all for 6 years until I moved down to be with him.

I always say the “honeymoon” period never ended. We’re still as happy and playful as ever. Of course had our rough patches but was never in anger of the other but going through hard times.

I think being long distanced helped as much as it hurt—especially as teens. We were able to grow together and individually. He’s my best friend and I feel so incredibly lucky to have found him by chance.

This song just resonates such a deep love between people. Where I feel lost for the words to describe how much I love my partner, I feel this song is as close as I’ll ever get.
