Only You
Calum Scott Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Only you, you you
Only you, you you
I remember in the school yard
The children didn't understand
So they bullied me with silence
Just for being who I am
So I got good at keeping secrets
I used to blend in with the crowd
On the inside I was screaming
With you I did not have to hide

Only you, could see that I was hurting
Only you, ever cared to understand
Always know, that I'd do do the same
I'd do anything for you, my friend
It's true

I used to stare up at the ceiling
Wide awake all through the night
Why the world was busy sleeping
I was so caught up in my mind

Only you, could see that I was hurting
Only you, ever cared to understand
Always know, that I'd do the same
I'd do anything for you, my friend
It's true
So true

When I'm all alone
A million miles away from home
Would you stand with me?
You'll always be
My rock and shoulder to lean on
Every hope I have is gone
I'll turn to you
You know it's true

Only you, could see that I was hurting
Only you, ever cared to understand
Always know, that I'd do the same
I'd do anything for you, my friend
It's true
So true

And I know
'Til the bitter end
I'd be proud to call you, my best friend
It's true

You, you you
Only you, you you

Overall Meaning

The song "Only You" by Calum Scott is a heartfelt tribute to a special friend who was always there for him. The song is an emotional confession of how the singer's life was so much brighter and better for having this friend in it, and how their bond was unbreakable. The lyrics also hint at the difficulties that Calum faced growing up, particularly the bullying and ostracization he experienced from his peer group. However, with his friend, Calum didn't have to hide any of his pain or insecurities. The song emphasizes how a true friend can help someone weather life's storms, and that person would do anything for that friend in return.

The chorus of "Only You" repeats the same lines over and over again, with "Only You" being followed by the lyrics "could see that I was hurting" and "ever cared to understand." This repetition highlights the significance of the friend who is being celebrated in the song. They are the only person who made Calum feel truly seen and understood, and who helped him through his darkest moments. The lyrics in the second verse describe Calum's struggles with insomnia, which he spent lying awake at night, feeling anxious and alone. But with his friend there, he felt like he had someone to turn to, someone who could provide him with a sense of comfort and security.

I’ve never related to a song more. In the past I had a good group of friends and one day when I was sad and stuff they all turned on me and left me by myself. I felt like I was on my own and I was invisible. This one friend of mine showed up and sat next to me when no one else in that group did. He is a great friend of mine and he is now my boyfriend

This song is about friendship and how important they are in our lives. Only those whom has been through bullying knows how complicated it is.
Everything said in the song was so true. Loved it! <3

Lucas Castro
And yeah it's also about him being gay , and that He couldn't do his coming Out while being in school i think .
Because Maybe that's why he's been bullied for being Different than the others ?
I don't really know , But it could have a meaning in the Song as well

@phoenix221298

@sarahtrahan5277

Lucas Castro I agree

@geomotrix

To state that only people who have been bullied know how important friends are is a bit closed-minded. Take me for example, I haven't been bullied once in my life. I wouldn't go so far as to say I've ever been popular but what I could say is I have a habit of making a friend out of anyone I meet.
Now, I have plenty, but only a few I can really trust or call close. And I know from my previous life experiences that if I had to do without any of them I would be at a loss for many things I take for granted. Daily social traits such as courage, thoughtfulness, drive, strength and humility would be some things I admit I would find extremely hard to come by were it not for these people supporting me, willing me on and pushing me to be the best version of myself but to also remain who I am as a person.
So to say that only someone who has been through bullying is capable of understanding how complicated going without friends like these can be is subjective. The significance is different, not absent.

In saying, if you have ever been bullied and without friends before, just know that there is someone out there willing to change that, you just need to find them. Stay hopeful, and when you do finally find that someone who you can trust and have care for you, never let them go because you have found a true friend.

Hope you're going strong and loving life, Lucas! Peace bro!
