Merrymaking at My Place
Calvin Harris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, oh, oh

Merrymaking, drug takin'
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking,

Come in to my house,
You're invited into my house,
Enter in the back of my house,
Welcoming you into my house,

Come in to my house,
You're invited into my house,
Enter in the back of my house,
Welcoming you into my house,

I've invited loads to my house,
Loads of people come to my house,
They take stuff inside of my house,
And smoke stuff outside of my house,

Merrymaking, drug taking,
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking,

I've seen it before,
Lots of people at my front door,
Lots of people in my front door,
Trying to get into my house,
I've seen it before,
Lots of people in my front door,
Lots of people at my front door,
Trying to get into my house,

Merrymaking, drug takin'
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking, drug takin
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking,

We're merrymaking,
All the stuff that you've been taking,
All the stuff that I've been taking,
All the stuff that we've been taking,
We're merrymaking,
All the stuff that we've been taking,
All the stuff that I've been taking,
All the stuff that you've been taking,

Merrymaking, drug takin',
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking, drug takin',
At my place, baby, at my place

(merrymaking)
(drug taking)

Merrymaking, drug takin',
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking, drug takin',
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking, drug takin',
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking, drug takin',
At my place, baby, at my place
Merrymaking,

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

Merrymakin'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Merrymaking at My Place seem to describe a house party where there is heavy drug use and partying going on. The choral repetition of "Merrymaking, drug takin'/ At my place, baby, at my place/ Merrymaking" highlights the main theme of the song, which is the celebration of hedonism and the joy derived from the use of illegal substances. The invitation to "come into my house" is repeated with the suggestion that the party is getting wilder as more people join in.

The lyrics suggest that Calvin Harris has already hosted several such parties, with "lots of people at my front door/ Trying to get into my house." The last verse brings everything to a crescendo, with the repetition of "We're merrymaking/ All the stuff that you've been taking/ All the stuff that I've been taking/ All the stuff that we've been taking" emphasizing the drug use and the communal experience of getting high.

Overall, the lyrics to Merrymaking At My Place paint a picture of a wild party with a hedonistic atmosphere, where getting high is the main objective and having a good time is the priority.

I still think Calvin Harris' first album remains his best to date

Mezzanine

what about Ready for the Weekend?

Aurva Roy

Isn't that true with other artists, not just Calvin Harris?

David Mitchell

@Aurva Roy nah - totally subjective tbh - for eg, I think some of prodigy's later albums are better than their first one, Same with Chemical Brothers, my favourite album is Further.

Charlie1821

I think Ready for the Weekend was where he found his "balance" in what hew as trying to do.... then he went overboard
