I've been scouring the comments to see if anyone shares my opinion on this scene but I haven't seen it so I'll post it here.

I think Barbosa knew exactly how to say the incantation correctly but didn't do it on purpose. He's been shown to be a very smart character and had already mentioned how to do it correctly, so there's no reason for him to "accidentally" do it wrong. Instead I think that both binding and releasing a god of the sea has to carry with it some burden which Barbossa knew about and didn't want to incur on himself. Barbossa's look at 0:54 after Ragetti says "you didn't say it right" always seemed to me as saying "alright then, you go on and enlighten us as to how it's done", trying to manipulate Ragetti into doing it himself. Barbossa is normally really aggressive but this time he just stands back, lets his subordinate call him out on doing something wrong and then lets him take the glory? Seems sketchy to me... More like it was on purpose.

@HateredPapyrus S I mean, if after having stated that the words must be said "as if spoken to a lover" he decided to scream them out into the heavens, then his problem would be leaving more towards idiocy rather than being un-romantic. The facts that (1) he's not an idiot, and (2) he went absolutely over the top with the ceremony words, are precisely what suggest to me that it was purposeful. Otherwise it would be weird and random for the film to portray him as a blathering idiot in this moment.

For as much as I loved these movies when I first saw them, I still feel like I underrated them. So many subtle facial expressions, vocal tones, jokes, hints in the dialogue etc. that I missed the first time(s) I saw them. I’m pretty sure the legend was that in the war of Gods and Titans of Greek mythological she supported the titans as her father was Atlas Kronos’ top general, she was cursed to be stuck on an island where every so often Greek heroes would end up, if she fell in love with them the hero would be able to leave which they always would as they always had something important going on but if she didn’t love them then they couldn’t leave.

I would say she didn't know who betrayed her and caused her imprisonment in human body. So that is why she asked him to name the betrayer. And why Will brought it up at that very moment? Davy Jones was at that time their imminent threat and this would help actually persuade her to "aid" them in order to get some revenge. She is still the goddess of the sea and sea is treaturous in nature. Even despite Barbossa keeping his vow, there was no guarantee she would keep her end of their bargain. Sea is moody and this revelation swung the mood against Davy Jones. That's my humble opinion at least.

@Jason Wayne oh yeah that's right. They traded jack for Will because both parties thought it would be to their advantage to trade prisoners. They wanted Jack as a pirate lord and a debt to pay. They wanted Will as a informer of the coming attack and a husband.

I think I recall something along the lines of nymphs being entities of a divine nature, but I don't know if that is sufficient to count them as demigods, gods, or anything else along those lines. I thought it was more like 'of divine origin', which is not quite the same as being divine, per se.

You know that scene from Game of Thrones where Tyrion paid for Podrick's visit at a brothel, then both Tyrion and Bronn were completely dumbstruck when the lad came back and still had the money?
Imagine a scene like that but in the PotC universe, taking place before Barbosa's mutiny, somewhere in Tortuga, Captain Jack and Barbosa instead of Tyrion and Bronn, with Ragetti as the Podrick of this scenario.

I think original scriptwritters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio had plans bringing Calipso back to Pirates in the future. Sadly they didn't get back to participate in the fifht movie.

Davy Jones was a sailor man and calypso goddess of the sea she could take both forms but Davy Jones only recognised the mortal form of her so even after 10yrs he thought she never came and betrayed her but she's always been there in her true form the sea so I understand why she was so hurt hearing his name as her betrayer .she never came in her human form but her primal he could never predict that but as a sailor a man of the sea who claimed to love her and was always at sea he should have know💙

So hold on. When she talked with Davy Jones earlier she said she'd turn on the pirates as soon as they released her, but then Will reminds her that Davy Jones betrayed her all those years ago and suddenly she just abandons her revenge and becomes...neutral I guess? The maelstrom didn't really help either side. Always struck me as weird in this scene.

She presumably used the Malstrom to vent her anger on both sides. Neither side had much of an advantage, and she was willing to accept either outcome, Davy Jones losing or the brethren court losing. Either way she would have revenge and could subject them to more if she wanted to.
