Working Nights
Camberwell Now Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That is how my life is planned
Eat, work, sleep when you're on the night shift
Wheels of industry turning around
Curtains drawn while the sun shines
Working hard all through the night - ah well
The night shift takes its time and takes its toll
The lyrics of Camberwell Now's Working Nights talks about the grueling life of a person working the night shift. The song is written in a simple yet powerful manner, reflecting the hardships that come with working odd hours. The lines "Three weeks on and one week off, that is how my life is planned" depict the rigid and inflexible schedule of a night shift worker. The lyrics are also indicative of the monotony and routine of a night shift, with the lines "Eat, work, sleep when you're on the night shift, Wheels of industry turning around."
The song effectively captures the feeling of being isolated and disconnected from the rest of the world, which is reflected in the line "Curtains drawn while the sun shines." The lyrics suggest that while the world is busy with their routine, the night shift worker spends his time in the darkness and sleeplessness.
In conclusion, Working Nights by Camberwell Now is a poignant account of the struggles and hardships that a night shift worker goes through. The lyrics paint a bleak yet realistic picture of the life of individuals who work through the night to keep the wheels of industry turning.

The bass playing on this album is so insane to me. I can’t even comprehend how he does it.

Met Hayward and Bullen at Pitchfork (they did a fucking meet and greet!). Told them I flew from Oregon to Chicago just to see them then turned and said "I have to admit though, The Ghost Trade is my favorite thing you've ever done." His response was "Oh yeah, we drove ourselves up the fucking wall doing that one!" Love it.
