FreeFall
Camel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in a freefall, like a snowflake falling,
Down, down, down, down, down.
I close my eyes inside my head I starfall
Helpless to the ground.
Down, down, down, down, down, oh yeah.

Smoke rings around me and bright sparks of fire
Flash by as I go.
I've got the feeling and it takes me higher
Than I'll ever know.
Go, go, go, go, go. Oooh.

(repeat)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Camel's song Freefall seem to be describing the sensation of falling, and the sense of helplessness that comes with it. The opening lines paint a picture of a snowflake falling through the air, a delicate and graceful image that is then contrasted with the feeling of being helpless and unable to control one's own descent. The use of repetition in the chorus underscores this sense of freefall, a never-ending descent that seems to have no end.

The second half of the song adds another layer to this imagery, as smoke rings and bright sparks of fire swirl around the falling singer. This suggests a loss of control, perhaps even a feeling of danger or impending doom. Yet despite this, the singer also describes feeling a sense of exhilaration, a buzz that lifts them higher than they've ever known. These conflicting emotions - fear and excitement, helplessness and thrill - hint at a broader meaning behind the song. Perhaps it's about taking risks and facing your fears, even when it seems like you're hurtling out of control.

Overall, Freefall is a song that uses vivid imagery and powerful emotions to explore the feeling of falling, both physically and metaphorically. While the lyrics themselves leave room for interpretation, they're undeniably evocative and thought-provoking.

I don't see it in the comments, so here are the lyrics:

I love this album. One of the most underrated album of the '70s. The guitar "fills" are so good.

There is something in this song that actually reminds me of some A. Scriabin sonatas. This is trully a masterpiece.

Love this album. They grew up fast between the debut and this one! Bardens and Latimer really deliver the goods here.

santy snowdog.

this album changed my life in 1980... and since them i love Camel this is one of the best rock albums in rock history.

Camel, unfortunately a very underrated band...they deserved much more success !
But now Latimer is in very good shape and this is the main thing, the two recent tours have been soooo gooood and full of success !

Yes very underrated especially in the US. Only a handful of prog bands made it really big in the US but Camel unfortunately weren't one of them. Nonetheless they did headline the northeast art rock festival(also known as NEARFest) in the US back in 2003. That was my only time seeing them and was a great show.

Pasquale Muzzupappa

Mike Reiss The people in USA are culturally very far from prog. Prog is a mixture of rock and classical music;only Europe was possibly the cradle of progressive rock
