Rhayader Goes to Town
Camel Lyrics

The townsfolk react coldly towards
Rhayader because of his odd appearance.
But their fear is mixed with curiosity for he
has a noble bearing.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Camel's song Rhayader Goes to Town depict the outsider Rhayader's experience when he arrives in town. The townsfolk are described as recoiling from him because of his strange appearance. However, the lyrics also imply that there is some fascination with Rhayader. He is said to have a noble bearing despite not fitting in with the norms of society. This creates a tension between the townsfolk's fear of the unfamiliar and their curiosity to understand this stranger.

It's possible that the lyrics reflect themes of ostracism, isolation, and narrow-mindedness. The townsfolk's rejection of Rhayader is presented as a rejection of what is different, odd or unfamiliar. However, the song also suggests that Rhayader's intrinsic worth as a person is not diminished because of his outsider status. It's perhaps a call to break down barriers and to embrace diversity.

Interestingly, the song is mostly instrumental which makes the lyrics even more impactful when they do appear. They provide a glimpse into the character and the story behind the song. Rhayader Goes to Town is a standout track on Camel's 1975 album The Snow Goose, and its haunting melodies and emotive storytelling have captivated listeners for over four decades.

i feel Camel's "The Snow Goose" album is by far the best musical interpretation of any Novel ever! like example, to me, 2:27 clearly interprets (musically) the Arrival of Rhayader into the town and the glimmer of the town depicted through the music... Such awesome Piece of Art this whole album is.. especially if one has read The Snow Goose.

So, a lump of old wood, add a few bits of wire, then add pure artistic skill. Result? Emotion-packed music of a kind that will transport the listener to a different world, where talent reigns supreme. Magical, ethereal experiences whenever they play.

I was there the night before, May 10. Pete Bardens was in the audience. I still have the ticket stub. Cost me 5 quid. I'd pay much more to see Camel one more time.
