Separation
Camel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know we're fighting every day,
It's as if somehow we've lost our way.
When we'd first begun, yeah, we lived as one,
Now as time goes on, we move our own way.

It's just no use in going on
When all the feeling now has gone.
You know we both have tried,
Yeah, we both have lied,
Now as tears subside, we move our own way.

Separation's the only way...
Separation starts today...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Camel's song Separation depict the painful end of a relationship that has been slowly crumbling over time. The song describes the process of the couple slowly drifting apart from each other until they have reached a point where they can no longer continue living as one. The opening lines of the song describe the constant fighting and sense of loss that has overtaken the couple's relationship. Despite having started out as one, over time they have each begun to live their own lives, moving in different directions until there is nothing left of what they once had.

As the lyrics progress, the couple comes to the realization that there is no use in continuing on with their relationship when all the love and emotion has dissipated. Both parties have tried to make it work, but ultimately they have both lied, and tears have been shed in the process. The pain of separation is evident in the repetition of the phrase "we move our own way." This indicates that the two parties are slowly drifting further apart until there is no choice but to separate. The final lines of the song, "separation's the only way... separation starts today," drive the point home that the couple has come to a painful conclusion: they must part ways.

In conclusion, the lyrics to Camel's song Separation depict the heartbreaking process of a couple slowly drifting apart from each other until there is nothing left of what they once had. It is a painful but common experience that many people can relate to.

Andy Ward, what a drummer. This is probably one of the best samples of his talent.

Steve loves Camel, Jethro Tull, and such, and it is quite clear his bass style is heavily influenced by prog bass lines.
Way more intricate basslines than metal generally had. And hurrah for that! :D
Maiden would have been pretty dull with simple bass lines.

@Matt MacNeil Thats right . From the first time i listened to it, it remind me of Maiden's early days!

As a huge prog/iron maiden fan I never thought of this, but it makes so much sense.

Could also be a song from Ashbury, U.S. band.
