Slow Yourself Down
Camel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They tell me you're searching for a new place,
They tell me tomorrow will have a true face.
They say that I don't understand,
When you speak of your summertime land -
Just slow yourself down, I'm coming along.

They tell me your past often hurt you,
And even your friends, they would desert you.
But now you are beginning to see,
The same things have happened to me -
Just slow yourself down, I'm coming along.

You tell me your dreams have been broken,
And not enough words have been spoken.
The time has come to see it through.

Slow down 'cause I'm coming with you -
Just slow yourself down, I'm coming along.

Overall Meaning

In Camel's song Slow Yourself Down, the singer addresses a friend who is searching for a new place and seems to be struggling with the past. The friend speaks of a "summertime land" that the singer doesn't understand, but the singer reassures the friend that they will come along on this journey. The friend's past has hurt them and caused friends to desert them, but the singer reveals that they have experienced similar things. The singer urges the friend to slow down and take their time, as they are ready to accompany them on this journey.

The friend is also struggling with broken dreams and a lack of communication. The singer once again reassures them that they are not alone and that they will see it through together. The repetition of "just slow yourself down, I'm coming along" emphasizes the singer's commitment to their friend and highlights the importance of taking things one step at a time.

Overall, the song emphasizes the importance of being there for one another through difficult times, and highlights the need to slow down and take things at a manageable pace. The summertime land mentioned by the friend could represent a happier and more carefree time in their life that they are trying to recapture, but the singer recognizes that the past cannot be changed and encourages their friend to focus on the present moment.

Best tune from Camel and one of the coolest and most dancing sounds from the whole Prog scene. For me these hoarse guitar and hammond together make one of my favorite solos of rock at all!! Since I discovered this tune (happy day!), I think I've never missed a week without listening to it. Bless you, Camelinho. Love you

It is a pleasure to be in your company. I don’t know another person on Earth who loves Camel. I remember feeling like I hit the lottery when I discovered these guys about 8 years ago. Revisiting today! Brain blasts!

Literally, I just discovered them a couple seconds ago and figured I'll give them a chance. Hope I have that same impression as you brother.

I've loved Camel since before some readers here were even born. One of their very cool songs, and unlike any other song I know by anybody, is "Friendship". Check it out. This cut is par with their usual excellence.
