The First Noel
Camilla Kerslake Lyrics

The First Noel, the Angels did say!
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay!
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep!
On a cold winter′s night that was so deep.!
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!!!

They looked up and saw a star!
Shining in the East beyond them far!
And to the earth it gave great light!
And so it continued both day and night.!
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!!!

And by the light of that same star!
Three Wise men came from country far!
To seek for a King was their intent!
And to follow the star wherever it went.!
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!!!

This star drew nigh to the northwest!
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest!
And there it did both Pause and stay!
Right o′er the place where Jesus lay.!

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!!! Then entered in those Wise men three!
Full reverently upon their knee!

And offered there in His presence!
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.!

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!!!

Then let us all with one accord!
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord!
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought! And with his blood mankind has bought.!

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Overall Meaning

The First Noel is a traditional Christmas carol that recounts the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The song begins with the announcement of the angel to the shepherds who were watching their flocks by night. The angel tells them the good news of the birth of a king in Bethlehem, which prompts them to go and see for themselves. The shepherds follow the star that the angel spoke of and find the baby Jesus lying in a manger.

The second verse describes the journey of the three wise men or Magi from the East, who also follow the same star. They come with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to pay homage to the newborn king. The third verse talks about the star that guided the wise men to Bethlehem and how it paused and stayed over the place where Jesus lay.

The final verse encourages everyone to sing praises to the Lord who has made heaven and earth and has bought mankind with his blood. The carol ends with the refrain, "Born is the King of Israel," which celebrates the birth of Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament and the long-awaited Messiah.

This is my favourite Xmas carol and it is delightful to hear Camilla sing it. I have her debut album and it is wonderful. She has a voice like a boy soprano but it is so listenable. I'm so glad she persevered in promoting herself and her talent so many thanks to Gary Barlow for all he has done to bring her to our attention. It is a question of being in the right place at the right time and luckily for Camilla and us,her fans, she gave up her time in persuading Gary to hear her music.
