Zombies
Can't Hang Lyrics

Next man die from a shot to the back
Next man took his own life for what it was worth
Put him in coffin under the earth
Then we place a headstone where he lay
Rest in peace man that's what we say
Ooh god that's what we say
Hey, hey
Chorus:
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
I'm gonna try and try and I'll try
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
Who are these evil creatures that are comin after me
What can I do to stop the powers that be
Their skin is pale and their eyes are red
Risen up from their graves they are the living dead
Chorus:
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
I'm gonna try and try and I'll try
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
One man die by an accident
Next man an overdose could not prevent
Next man drop dead as I sing this verse
Away in that herse- under the earth
Then we place a headstone where he lay
Rest in peace man, that's what we say
Ooh god that's what we say
Hey, hey
The living dead, yes the living dead (repeat)
Chorus:
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
I'm gonna try and try and I'll try
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
Who are these evil creatures that are comin after me
What can I do to stop the powers that be
Their skin is pale and their eyes are red
Comin' up from their graves they are the living dead
Chorus:
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
I'm gonna try and try and I'll try
Zombies
Why won't you die
Zombies
The song "Zombies" by Can't Hang appears to be a reflection on death and the fear of the unknown. The lyrics describe different ways in which people have died - heart attack, shot to the back, suicide, overdose - and the cultural rituals that follow, such as burying them and placing a headstone. However, the chorus reveals that the fear of death persists even when someone is already deceased - the "zombies" won't die, and the singer can't seem to stop their advance. The lyrics suggest that death may not be the end, and that the dead may come back to life as frightening "evil creatures" with pale skin and red eyes.
The repetition of the phrase "why won't you die" in the chorus is particularly poignant, as it suggests a frustration with the fear of death that permeates so much of human existence. Rather than embracing the inevitability of death and accepting it as a natural part of life, the singer of the song seems to be struggling against it, desperately trying to find a way to make the zombies stop.
Taken as a whole, "Zombies" offers a meditation on mortality that is both unsettling and thought-provoking. It suggests that death may not be as final as we believe, and that even after we are gone, our memories and legacies may linger on in ways that are both frightening and comforting.
