Someone To Watch Over Me
Canadian Brass Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Still were often told, seek and ye shall find
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind
Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet
Hes the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret
I'd like to add his initial to my monogram
There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me
I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
Someone who'll watch over me
Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key
Won't you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me
In Canadian Brass's Someone To Watch Over Me, the performer is expressing the desire for finding someone to watch over them. The song opens with the line "There's a saying old says that love is blind", which implies that despite the potential for disappointment or heartbreak, one must still search for love. The performer knows who they are looking for, "a certain lad I've had in mind" but they haven't found him yet. The phrase "big affair" implies that this person holds high significance in their life.
Furthermore, the performer has not been able to forget about this person and thinks of them with regret because they haven't found them yet. The performer's desire to add their initials to their monogram highlights their desire to be with this person. The phrase "where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?" implies their longing for someone to watch over them and guide them to this person. The last stanza indicates that the performer only wants someone to watch over them and be kind, despite the potential lack of physical attractiveness to others.
Overall, the performer's lyrics in Someone To Watch Over Me express their longing for someone special to watch over them, and guide them towards the person they have in mind. The lyrics are poignant and express the desire for unconditional love and guidance.

I have been listening to the Canadian Brass since 93', my freshman year in highschool. My band director introduced us to the group early, and encouraged us in so many ways to emulate them. He set the bar high, much like the caliber of music the Canadian Brass has been producing since before I was born. Love it, keep it up, please!
