Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.
He Called Me Baby

All night long
Used to hold and kiss me
Till the dawn
Then one day I awoke
And he was gone
There's no more baby, baby
He called me baby, baby
All night long
Lord, I feel so empty
Since he's been gone
Now I lie here and I die here
Until the dawn
I miss my baby, baby, baby
All night long
He called me baby, baby, baby
All night long, yes, he did
Kiss my tears away
When things went wrong
What I'd give, what I'd give
If he'd come on back home
And call me baby, baby, baby
All night long, oh, yeah
Mmm hmm, yeah
He called me baby, baby
All night long
Held me up so high
And made me strong
Now each night in dreams
Just like a song
I can still hear baby, baby, baby
All night long
I can still hear
Baby, baby, baby, baby
All night long
I can still hear him
Calling me baby, baby, baby, baby
All night long
Oh, what you do
Is just hold me, baby
Squeeze me, baby
All night long
I just wanna hear you say baby
The Candi Staton song He Called Me Baby tells the bittersweet story of a woman who was once deeply in love with a man who used to call her “baby” all night long, but eventually left her alone and feeling empty. The lyrics emphasize the ups and downs of their relationship, as the singer recalls how her lover used to hold and kiss her until the dawn broke. However, one day she woke up to discover that he had vanished from her life, leaving her longing for his sweet words and touch.
The song is ripe with emotion, as the woman desperately tries to hold onto the memory of her lover’s affection. She reminisces about how he used to kiss her tears away and hold her up high, making her feel strong. Even in her dreams, she can still hear him calling her “baby, baby, baby” all night long. The lyrics convey her deep desire for her lover to come back home and hold her once again, reminding listeners of the pain of lost love and the power of memory.

I am 34 years old and I do not recall ever hearing of this woman or her amazing voice, CHEATED I am!! She's amazing!
@suraya1224
@j77walker: You were just born too late 🙂. Her big hit was "Young Hearts, Run Free" in 1976. I was 23, & remember it well, on the radio. "She Called Me Baby" was written in 1961, sung by country artists Charlie Rich, Patsy Cline, & many others. My fav version is by Brit indie group, One Eskimo, in the 1990s, where they added a man's part, & "sampled" Candi Staton's voice, from her 1971 cover. Genius!

I never knew she sung this song until I heard this song in a tv series just now called the Baby.
