Quite possibly the saddest and most beautiful Christmas song ever. Bittersweet. Hearing it as a kid meant nothing. Hearing it as an adult at Christmas time after losing both parents and other family members….pretty rough. Tear up every time. Still….a beautiful song. ❤️

I was a pianist for Nordstom for many years and one Christmas someone asked me to play Hard Candy Christmas. I admit I had never heard the song, but I am a sight reader so I played through it. As I was playing I read the lyrics and by the end, I was barely able to see through the tears. I have played it a million times since then and it has become a favorite. I play it much more slowly, and pensively. What I most appreciate is the key change at the end, where utter sorrow becomes a tentative commitment to buck up, and go on. Thank you Dolly for such a beautiful, beautiful song.

@tj921able thank you. You two. I come from a very large family. I had 8 siblings, I have 3 left and me. I am second to the youngest. We lost two Sisters within 8 months. First the oldest, due to massive heart attack, it happened unexpectedly and very fast. 6 months later Our Youngest Sister went to the hospital for a severe backache. 2 hrs later, she was told She had cancer and about 6 months to live. That was on Jan.6, 2019, she lost her battle just after midnight on March 10, just hrs after her youngest Son and his fiancee had just welcomed a beautiful daughter. My Sister made her Son promise he would not name the baby after her. 4 months later my sister's youngest Son was found deceased in a vacant parking lot. All of his belongings were gone, he was nude. The detectives listed it as an accidental suicide, all because 2 days before he was found, he had posted a message to his deceased mother that he wished there were telephones in Heaven. I was furious, I spoke to the detective and said, I wanted an investigation, all of his belongings were missing including his cell phone, wallet and paycheck not to mention his clothes and sneakers. I said to the detective, I'm not denying he was missing his Mother, but he loved his Daughter and Fiancee. And when his Daughter gets older and she hears her Dad allegedly died from an accidental suicide, how do you think she is going to feel. Not to mention accidental suicide, that doesn't make any sense. What about the robbery, where are all his personal items? The Detective said, he understood my grief, but he talked to my sister's husband/ my nephews father, and when he explained to him, they couldn't make any promises that they could find out who did this. I couldn't believe what the Detective told me, he stated that my sister's husband/my nephews father stated that's ok, because I just lost my Wife, 4 months earlier, and I'm not up to going to a trial!! The Detective then said, well We could list it as an accidental suicide, and We can close the case. The so called husband/father stated "that will be great"!!. Then Our Son's dog who he treated as a child ended up having seizures two days after the lock downs due to covid, they started at 5:00 am and kept going, We finally found a vet. open around 10:00 a.m. my two Sons rushed him over to the vet. Within a half hour, my Son had to make the decision to have him put to sleep, because he had suffered severe brain damage, they wouldn't even allow my Sons to be with their Dog, because of the rules pertaining to covid, even though the dog nor my Sons didn't have covid. As if that wasn't enough, back when my Oldest Sister past, 6 weeks later, My Son's best friend was found murdered by his Own Brother. They use to call each other my Brother from another Mother. Also during the strict rules of covid, my youngest brother's 15 yr. old Granddaughter had to have a complete hysterectomy, and no one was allowed to be with her. Then on September 11, 2021, one of my other Nieces, who was allowing her dad to live in her basement. He had been sick for two weeks, despite her pleading with him to go to the hospital, he refused. On Sept.11, she went down to check on her dad, who was our oldest brother, and found him deceased. The autopsy showed he passed from liver disease. On Oct. 26, 2020 my husband's grandmother passed away 10 days later, her husband passed away. On March 1, 2021, my husband's Uncle who was also his best man at our wedding passed away. Literally there's about 10 other people we know that passed away in the last 2 years.and already this year, 3 other people that We know have passed away. In my opinion, there's no doubt GOD is cleaning up. And it's just not bad people being removed, GOD is calling a lot of his Angels home. Have you heard how many people from Hollywood and other Entertainers that have passed. There's a beautiful Gospel song that I listen to a lot, the title is "For these tears, I Died" you can also bring it up under the title "Come to the Water" also my favorite poem is "Footprints in the Sand". When their birthdays come up and what I refer to as their rebirth days, I say a prayer to them and I usually play a Gospel song. As with everything, some days are harder than others, but I know all my love ones who are no longer on Earth, wouldn't want me to be stuck in grief. So even on hard days, I make myself get up, I open the curtains to let the SUN shine come in and I light candles and or incents. I hope some of this helps. Trust me, I really can relate to what your feeling. I will pray for you. These are definitely the end times, We are going through. I still believe we do have brighter and better days ahead of us. This song hits home with me, my parents had very little money in the 1950s. Their was a 11 of us so getting many presents was not expected but we did get the hard candy and it was a thrill to this little boy. We did have a hard candy Christmas.i am sure Dolly wrote this from her own experience.

My mother and I listened to this alot while she was in the nursing home. She passed on December 12, 2003 and ever since I listen to this the whole month of December just brings back the memories I had with her and the 5 hard yrs in the NH! I know she is with my daddy and brother and sister until we meet again ! I miss her so much! My 😇

So sorry. That must hurt so much. I had a miscarriage and the next year got pregnant....went into labor at 26 weeks. About to bring home baby boy in 3 weeks God willing after 2 1/2 mths in nicu. Nicu is tough, but he made it so thankful. I Pray you are able to concieve and give birth to a healthy baby soon.
