I Can't Make You Love Me
Candy Dulfer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices
Inside my head

Lay down with me
And tell me no lies
Just hold me close
Don't patronize
Don't patronize me

I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark in these final hours

I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no, you won't
I can't make you love me if you don't

I'll close my eyes
Then I won't see
The love you don't feel
When you're holding me

Morning will come
I'll do what's right
Just give me til then
To give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark in these final hours

I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no, you won't
Oh, oh, oh, can't make you love me
(Can't make if you don't)
Oh, oh, oh, can't make you want me
(Can't make if you don't)

I can't make you love me if you don't

I can't make you love me if you don't
(Oh, oh, oh, me if you don't)

Overall Meaning

In Candy Dulfer's song "I Can't Make You Love Me," the singer is confessing their inability to force someone to love them. The lyrics emphasize the powerlessness the singer feels in the situation, as they try to convince their lover to feel differently. The first stanza sets the scene, with the singer asking for a moment of intimacy amidst the chaos of their thoughts. The second stanza speaks directly to the heart of the song, with the singer acknowledging that they can't make their lover feel a way they simply don't. The following stanza looks to the future and the eventual surrender of the singer, who recognizes that what they want is not possible.

The repetition of the line "I can't make you love me if you don't" in the chorus is a heart-wrenching admittance of defeat, and the second line drives the point home even further- "you can't make your heart feel something it won't." Despite the hurt that the singer feels, they still acknowledge the power of their love, even if it's not reciprocated. They "will lay down my heart and feel the power." In the end, the song is a stark reminder of the limitations of love and the importance of accepting reality.

I've watched this rendition countless times. The entire arrangement is tight! Everybody did their part. UB killed it on that guitar solo! If you cant get down with this, then you dont understand music.

I have never played an instrument, but I have a keen ear for music that is what you call, tight. No slop, no missed keys, no lulls or space. Besides I love Candy Dulfer.

Gareth Owen

Spot on with ub. I’ve followed him and candy for years now with they music and they are brilliant.

MisterMister5893

It’s a nice solo for sure but if you want killer guitar playing, give chieli minucci a listen. His solo work as well as his special efx work.

Solo of UB on Nikki’s Dream…also 🔥

Remco Lamberts

Candy is a legend, her musical partnership with Ulco magical ❤. Never get bored with this rendition, so timeless and with so much respect and honouring the original. This one tears me up every time I hear it. Also, their sound, this performance was 25 years ago, and still sounds fresh.

Duncan Smith

It is rare nowadays to hear a beautifully constructed, extended guitar solo. So,,well done to Mr Bed for this wonderful piece.

Gary Thompson

Superb simple as that ❤❤❤

Ben Jammin'

His soloing is wonderful. Internationally underrated guitar talent

@Ben_Jammin_ I cannot understand why he isn't well known. Maybe he's so good, the others don't want to let word get out about him. No really, it's almost like he intentionally avoids fame. It is definitely a mystery. He should be on every list of best guitarists ever, in the top 5 in my humble opinion.
